Working evenings the past few days so been sleeping little but getting stuff done at home. This is for burning in '16-'17.

Another haul of red oak this morning...

The pile of the small stuff needing some bucking...

The pile of rounds that is growing, mostly oak with some hard pine and maple mixed in...

And the eventual landing spot, with a bunch of white pine waiting to be split...

Each year sits at about 4.5 cords, and I try to mix in a cord of pine in that total. I'm about a 1.5 cord of oak shy of being 3 years ready (pending the dreaded splitting and stacking.)

37, nice looking oak rounds you have there! They're heavy aren't they!

Your stacks look great too! I like your pine and oak mix idea too.

I see you have a splitter, you just need a kid or two to help with the stacking.

I have a kid, or two... just at 4.5 and <1yr they aren't such great stackers. The 4yr does a decent job when she is helping but she's only good for the bottom 2'. The plan is to finish cutting by June then switch focus to splitting & stacking as it's easier to find the time once it's home.

Nice load of oak and nice stacks. What do you use as your top cover?

Love those pics 37. I've never been very good at IDing wood. I've been working with some red oak enough lately I think I could spot it now in just about any mix. Nice stuff…

Thanks, I top cover only the next year's stacks. This is the first year I've done it so early, but lots of pine needles fall on the tops and stay soggy. It's just old metal roofing I got from my uncle.

Those are fine oak rounds and the plan to use R.oak three years out is perfect. You got yerself a whoppin' bunch of wood there and a decent layout of big stacks! Good job, sir! Sure do hope ya get a chance to catch up on sleep soon, though...

Here I am thinking (when I saw the thread title) what other job can this guy have... He has the same second (or third at some times) as I have. Good looking stacks, Dennis would be proud of you!

We did some experimenting with covering. Like you, we use old metal roofing. We do leave it uncovered the first summer and fall but top cover before snow piles up; usually around December 1. Not too many years ago we decided to experiment because it has been many, many years since we left wood uncovered.

The results were not exceedingly bad but the wood certainly was not as good as our regular wood stacks. The problem we found was that the wood seemed to burn quicker which means not as much heat as normal and we got almost double the amount of ashes from that wood. Needless to say, we won't be doing that again.

As for pine needles and leaves on the wood stacks, we've never had a problem with it but perhaps it is because they only get one fall's worth of leaf and pine needles. But I'll add that as of late we haven't done much stacking near the pines. One time we had about 10 cord stacked right in the pines but had no problem with it.
