A buddy called last week to make sure I wanted some soft maple he was having cut, of course I said yes. Yesterday he called to let me know his neighbor got in on the deal with the tree service and had some tree's removed too. The neighbor had some small maples, a white oak trimmed and a big tulip poplar removed, probably 60-70' tall(25" or so diameter) and straight as an arrow so it should split up nice. I know tulip isn't great, charts are all over the place anyone have a good chart for BTU's? Today I made it over for the first load, I'm hoping I can get the rest of with tomorrows trip. Only took the one picture, the trailer was probably at/over it's limit the bed of the truck was filled too but I didn't get crazy. For perspective the trailer sides are 16'x7'x2'. Gotta love a diesel when it's time to work.
15 - 15.5 mil BTU per cord Roughly A little more than cottonwood & a little less than aspen. Shoulder season, fire-pt/ campfire wood, Splits easy, Dries fast, burns fast. Weigh a few wet splits now & then again in Oct. Amazing how light it gets when dry. I got a load of cottonwood Jan 2012, split & stacked. Real light weight now, lights & burns great in the fire pit
No matter, it will all burn when it's dry. My only thought would be using the poplar as shoulder wood or added in a mixture of harder midseason wood.
Great hauls. Your trailer is what I'd call perfect size & cap for the job at hand… both for the wood and the truck pulling it…
Nice score, rdust. How far away is this from your place? I know a guy that calls Poplar "go-fer" wood. I burn it anyway. Not a ton, but it burns.
Tulip poplar isn't even a poplar which I drop and let rot. I put Tulip as an equivalent to Silver Maple: easy to split, dries fast, burns good in a big steel box with a cat
It's a bit of a hike but not bad, probably 30 miles one way. I figured probably close to 2 cords in a load for less than 20 bucks in fuel ain't a bad deal. Hard to beat picking up wood at the side of the road. I like Silver Maple so this is good info, I was hoping it was somewhat similar. I could heat all season on silver maple with no issues so if it's even close to that I'm good.
Picked up the rest of it last night, another pretty full load. This load was mostly maple with a little of the tulip left from the day before. I'll snap a picture of the mess if I have time to deal with it over the weekend. Already had a cord or Norway sitting, a cord + of pine and now this stuff. I got lots of splitting ahead of me.
Nice haul. Lighter fast drying wood always has a place in my firebox. It mixes well with higher btu stuff that doesn't burn as easily. Most wood is useful.
Not really! I hate have it all heaped up waiting to split. I like it better when I can bring home a load and stay on top of things. Crazy thing is the tree service that feeds me wood occasionally has only had a load for me to pick up so far. Not sure what I'm gonna do if he starts calling, I'm gonna have to find a nice home to donate to.
Great haul there Awesome, that your set up to haul a lot at once, I can only get a 1/2 to 3/4 cord at once
I wish! I should get some time here and there to work on the pile but it's gonna be a while before it's done. Usually I use a couple vacation days a year to just process wood, work is super busy right now so I'm unsure when I'll be able to escape! I hate taking time away from the wife/kids(young kids) to process wood so I try to do it when they're not around. When the kids are older I'm sure they'll want to help with the processing.
