It’s being overtaken by vines and has caused some problems with roots in my drains. It’s a maple and I’ll keep as much as I can for firewood. I had a tree service here today to give me a quote on taking it down and grinding the stump, they are also going to trim a big maple in the front of the house. It will be a month or two until they can get to it but I’ll be glad to have it gone! 526F9F8B-4F2C-4A87-A292-B936C45C4926.jpeg

Looks like a very smart move. Out here the ivy takes over and eventually the weight gets to be too much if there is any lean at all.
Too bad they can’t get it before the leaves are on it.

What is the species of maple and what will it yield cordwise? What is DBH? Will they discount price if they fell it and you buck it up or leave it in long pieces? I had a customer do it this way and it save him several hundred dollars.
A lot less stuff in the rain gutters for sure!

I think it's a Silver Maple, DBH is probably 30". It will have to come down in smaller pieces due to it being so close to the house and a big part of it is hanging over the house. Looking forward to less gutter cleaning for sure !

Well, it won't be a cheap job... But it'll be cheaper than buying a new house and family if it were to blow down in the wrong direction. Money well spent. We had to take down a beast in September that put the neighboring building and our rental at serious risk. Most expensive firewood I've ever seen! But like yours, had to be done. Easy enough to make more money, but people and property are harder to replace.

I would take it down too... I had to pay for one last year, also a maple that was rotting and could hit the house.
Hated to pay for a pro, but sometimes you should.

You will be happy when that trees gone I suspect.... :salute:

A lot of people turn their noses up at it...but I love it! I need to get more of it...have very little right now.
Drys fast and burns hot! Not a great overnight wood in January, but I love mixing a few pieces in with Oak, and other harder woods...makes a great fire!

I'd burn that silver maple up no problem, i got about a cord and a half last year or so and it did ok. One thing do all you can do to kill the roots, if you don't, it'll come back with a vengeance. A guy about 4 blocks from me had a big one in his yard, so he cut it down, didn't pay that much attention to it. Pretty soon, sprouts started poking up, then a little brush, now, that tree is gone, but, there are tree's growing in the same corner of the big one, they are all about 8'' across, and its starting to really look bad in that same corner the big old tree came out of.

That is a nasty looking job! Glad I don't have to cut that one.

Wouldn't it be a good idea to cut all those vines at ground level so they don't start leafing? I would think that would make the whole job easier including the blocking you'll have to do.
