Did a tour of the neighbourhood on foot last weekend and found some logs on the outside of the fence of a closeby neighbour. They had been cut by the electricity company after the storms we had 2 weeks ago. Went up to the house this morning and found out that the owner is a lovely old lady who used to burn wood in the stove for years, but can't do it anymore because she's to weak nowadays. Asked if I could take the logs, wich was no problem at all. She was happy to get rid of it ! It's not much but it's Cherry. But, but...she has a huge property with lot's of trees on it, a few down already, a few dead standing. So I asked her if I could help her out clearing the property...and she said YES! There's a huge amount of primo firewood waiting for me ! White oak, red oak, Cherry, Birch, and others. Sooo, more to follow! Hoard on fellas![IMG][IMG]

No there's more. I had a trailer full. The wheelbarrow is just an example. But indeed you got me wondering if it's not some kind of oak, but it smell's like Cherry...

The bark texture and color are reminiscent of a variety of red oak in these parts. Im not familiar with your natives species so if it smells like cherry it could be! As long as its BTU's and its easy to split! Do you split with an axe/maul?

Everything by hand here sir ! I must admit I have a daughter of almost 16 years old who loves to split with the axe. So she's a great helper. She even asked me to buy her a Fiskar 27 for her 16th birthday ! Anyway, the logs I picked up this morning are a pleasure to split and it smells heavenly! And there's more to come !

That is great that you not only got some wood but also able to help an elderly neighbor. Probably a widow and yes, we should help out the widows. Good on you.

Nice score and nice future access. Maybe she could still burn some if you cut and split it small. My mom does still burn, she is 92. I just split it small for her.

You're correct. Going back tomorrow for another 2 loads. I will ask her if I can help her with some smaller splits. Good thinking ! Btw, I will also repare her fence (big branches fell on it during the storm).

That one round right in the back surely looks like a cherry.

From what I saw yesterday, my guess would be 3 cords from what is down already (fresh cut by the company and dead logs). But there are a lot of dead standing trees on the property. Hard to say what it is and how much it will represent. Let us say it's a plaisant challenge . The house of the lady is sitting on an acre. Almost a forest !

That was my thought but you beat me to it.
Maybe offer to look down her chimney to see if there are any problems and needs cleaned. We want to be safe.
