Im driving early this afternoon when i pass a small sign saying "FREE WOOD". I hit the brakes, turn around as any dedicated FHC member would, and sure enough, i wasnt seeing things, but "FREE LOGS"! I pull way in and the pile of logs is up in back of this old gristmill on a small river which i believe dates back to colonial times. It was later a tavern/night club, has changed owners a few times in the past several years and is now under restoration after being vacant for a while. Ironically i had my wedding reception there in 2000 (divorced in 2004). Beautiful post and beam construction inside from what i remember. Well there is this pile of skidded logs nicely stacked. Nobody around, no phone number, no contact info. It has a nice gravel road to easily back up cut and load. Five minutes from home to boot. I know a couple FHC members who will tell me i need a ported saw, for which this i will say yes i do! No April fool here. This is real! These are some BIG logs. The one with the half black end is well over 36"
Captain Obvious here: You need a ported saw, grapple trailer & processor lol. That's a huge score of some excellent wood. Pay to get it hauled if you have to?
Holy crap Batman, a hoarders wet dream...I’d camp out til I secured them from the owner-not too much poplar in it from what I can see. A logger with a picker truck will swoop on that in a heartbeat. As amateur cutter said, pay someone to have them moved all at once and get them to your place, even if it costs you $300 or so, its a gift. PS-Your L rear tire looks low...and I’d donate that knot infected whatever kinda a tree it is to someone with an OWB...thats insane looking
you were one of the members but i didnt want to mention names amateur cutter . Im hoarded way over my head now at a conservative estimate of 26 cords...mostly CSS. My space is limited (its on my landlords property) as well. Gotta see if i can get more info tomorrow.
Im wondering why the tree service is giving it away Ashwatcher. Theres such a glut of wood around from the gypsy moth oak kill off and the tornadoes that went though last May as my guess. It is premium quality wood from what i saw in the couple minutes i was there. Truck may be sagging as i had some white oak splits in back. The knotty tree may be burled.
Cant speculate buZZsaw BRAD until you talk to the owner-could be an insurance deal, if they used a tree service they dont market logs but could have had a skidder or rented one, etc...hard to say-But...if cut in Sept, the beech, maple, ash and poplar will be dry enough to burn and sell come this fall if you get it CSS quickly...we’ll be waiting for updates and back story
I was referring to my own wood on hand Ashwatcher that was CSS since September. Most of the wood pictured was recently cut based on what i saw.

Being cut since last Sep? No, won't be dry enough for next season. Unless-maybe-some was standing dead mixed in there-that may be dry by next season then
Throw a $100-$200 to the landowner for good faith and to lock it in. It could have been a falling out with the logger, which happens from time to time. Have it moved and sell it if you are stocked up. Find a affluent neighborhood, and sell it for premium. I would sell 6 month css to a guy for $120 per face cord delivered where I once lived and he loved it. Only sold three loads, but it’s good cash flow..... good luck
Great find Brad!! I can understand the drool factor your going through haha. FWIW if your still kicking around the possibilities in your head let me add.... You may find cheap land rental at the old factories and industrial parks you must have in your area. Often they’ll rent out an area of back parking lot or land they get no income from as is. A secured industrial area would be best or your splits may disappear at night. You’d also need equipment to move and process that. Just thought I’d stir the pot in your brain LOL Could be the mills just don’t want it at all. That’s pretty much what the S Ranger told me. The mills are inundated. Ct’s Logging industry is tiny compared to many regions. They just can’t handle the glut. Probably don’t even have customers lined up for the product they have now. Many folks who own a bit of land are sending in loggers in an attempt to make some money off their dieing forests. I was toying with the idea of getting a bandsaw mill before I noticed just how many small logging efforts were taking place.
