That looks almost exactly like some mystery wood I posted here a few years ago. Split easy, had a pleasant smell to it. And ends up pretty light when drued (a bit heavier than poplar). Consensus was some sort of elm. But I really don’t know.
at first glance i would've said black locust. Mulberry?? They look pretty similar, mulberry is pretty yellow ish when split then dries to a deep red color.
it reminds me of a mystery wood i cut two winters ago. It was heavy and tough to split by hand..the finished splits reminded me of elm...very stringy and twisted. I never did determine what it was. I have access to the splits and will have to take some pics to compare.
Going with red elm as well... although I'm no expert. Does look like the wood from my last score. Will post the story with pics in a coming thread.
Is looks pretty close to red elm to me..... This is a load of red elm, bark looks close...red elm bark is thin and growth rings are pretty tight. Not sure on that white sapwood though..
Do you have pics of your locust? Or a pic of the mystery wood split.Your pics look like young locust. Young locust trees will have the white cambium ring like in your first pic.
I finally got into splitting some of the "Nightmare Elm" the other day....yep, it's definitely elm. I didn't get any pictures of it, nobody wants to see that mess anyway. Yuck. I will probably pick up free pine before I touch elm or gum for that matter ever again.
