If it were anything but oak I'd have tried. Too far for oak with how much I have very close currently

IMG_20190404_50776.jpg The dump has been very active, mostly just leaves and pine branches being dropped off. Still, I found some birch and dry oak, plus some patio blocks in great shape.

I was surprised to only see a single branch down on my trip to and from the schools this morning. Of course it was a punky mess, and on our private road, so I got to pick up all the pieces and toss em in the woods

Nice looking logs. Should be good to burn next heating season, I'd think.

I know of some punks that should be tossed....around.

Looks like my kinda scrounge Midwinter , If I didn't know any better I would think I was looking at my own post. Any Idea what you will do with the patio block? If you're like me you collect certain basic materials until you have enough of it to spark an idea for a project. If you like those stone counter top remnants you should investigate some stone cutting dealers. They fill yard fill bins with great stone cut offs daily. I visit a place by me after hours all the time and got some good marble once and I always get granite and quartz. Unfortunately it could be cracked up and as you can imagine it's hit or miss. Just be careful not to get hurt digging through the heavy pile of rubble.

The granite guys dump their scraps at the dump. There's a special section for stone waste. I use the skinny strips to weigh down tarps, and the bigger ones to put under racks, to discourage weed growth. I don't know what I'll do with the patio blocks, but they'll come in handy for something.

Guy on Nextdoor (10 min from my house) said he had just had a maple tree taken down, so I headed over. My man came out with a chain saw to cut the logs to length for me - how about that level of service! Maxed out the storage in my Tahoe and then went back for a second load a few days later. This right here was the first load. Perfect size for my smoker and firepit!

Nice score, wolfpackwx! You can fit a lot in a Tahoe. Going to split it? Welcome to FHC, and the elite corps of car hoarders... the few, the proud, etc.

Already did and have already moved on to my next score. Poplar and sugar maple! We have a company around here who cuts down trees, breaks them down to size and puts it up on Craigslist for free. So, fairly constant supply, but you have to be quick. IMG_20190324_134018.jpg

Nice stacks, they should dry quick in the VA sun. Can you jump on Craigslist offers without the constraints of a <ahem> job? Up here in NH the tree services sell their logs to firewood processors. There are a lot more wood burners up here.

Ha I wish! This is more of a weekend hustle for me. It's really only one company down here who does that, not sure why but I imagine they save their clients money for the inconvenience of people randomly showing up to haul the wood off. I also did hear that companies here are charged by the load to drop off their logs at processing locations or mulch yards, unless they are also a processor. The other week, this company was taking down 20 white oak trees in a corporate park. I showed up and there was a line of 6 people with trailers waiting. Luckily, I was only looking for a modest load, so the fellas let me take a few, quality sections and I got out of their way. Still waiting or a solid hickory, apple or peach score to really have the variety I want for my smoker.

Friend of mine had a neighbor who was having a cherry taken down a few weeks ago. Called me and asked if I wanted some...of course I did! So me and my wood gathering buddy headed for a 1 hr drive up I-95 to load up. Once split and seasoned, I'll be able to smoke a ton of pork butts!!!

Hey wolfpackwx , Nice solid cherry! I just got some road side mulberry and locust today and it wasn't worth posting pics, but the last few days I've been getting small scrounges like that and its adding up in the yard so I better get some processing and stacking going. Believe it or not for the first time this season I got a little sweat going from this small scrounge today so summer must be nearing. Just curious, what is your method of splitting? Mauls, or do you have a powered log splitter?

I have a maul, but for this and some Silver Maple I recently got, I bought a Sun Joe manual 10 ton hydraulic splitter. Split (pun intended) 3 ways between 2 friends who benefit from my finds, it worked out to $42 per person, so $126 total. Tried it out today and what a difference!

Okay cool, glad you like it. Plus it's like getting in some cross country skiing time haha!
Tell your friends that as part of the deal they need to keep their eyes and ears open for a scrounge at all times.:binoculars: :handshake:

Sadly, I'm the only one with a car worth using to scrounge. And with me being in the burbs, my chances of a score are much higher anyway. Also they contribute in manual labor and alcohol, so I don't mind doing a little heavy lifting! :D
