Yes, it is spring but where are the birds. I've never seen a spring like this year as we usually by this time are hearing all sorts of birds, especially robins. Yet, we just are not seeing them here. Like yesterday when I was out stacking wood, being right next to the woods and also open area I expected to see and hear lots of birds...but practically nothing. We usually are swamped with robins too and my wife has seen one but I've seen none on our place. What happened? I'm wondering if perhaps there was a lot of bird kill in some of the bad storms down south but really don't know. So, are we the only ones not seeing the birds? I'm sure most folks will see some in their travels but what about at home? About the only birds we are seeing in abundance are turkeys and I wish they were all gone.
I don't know where your birds are, but I am seeing a fair amount here, Northern Ohio. I have an owl for the first time in my owl box, which has been hanging in that tree about 6 years. I am telling anyone who will listen because he/she is cool.
I love observing the spring return. I’m sure they’ll be to you soon enough. Robins started flooding in around our area just yesterday. Saw a few indigo buntings in the yard last week. Kicked up an unexpected woodcock in my sugarbush a couple weeks ago and another when scouting out a piece of forested property a friend of mine is looking to purchase. Geese are back in droves. Doves too. Saw a handful of ringneck ducks last week in a swamp where I was doing some beaver work. They’re on their way through headed back north. One of the drakes was displaying for the hens. Beautiful birds. Got this barred owl watching me lately. Usually we just hear them calling out back in the evenings.
Here in the PNW, the humming birds are really out and about, but, some hung around all winter and we kept the feeders full of juice for them. Had 4 sitting on the feeder this morning all at once. Yesterday when i filled it, had it in my hand and one came within 2 ft of me. There are a couple of beautiful bright red headed male's and a couple of dainty, little females. Robins are around, and a few other birds as well.
I'm very very envious. We would have hummingbirds by this time in Colorado too. They were really friendly, (except when the males were fighting over territory). We lived on a decently steep mountain, so I had full view of the different mating dance patterns from all the way to the ground below to 20' up in the air. Amazing little birds. Miss them. Sorry you're not seeing birds yet Backwoods Savage , I was so excited to see some Barn Swallows but they keep coming and going. Wondering if it's actually different groups just staying over a night or 3 at a time on migration somewhere north of here.
Not much here either, except for flocks of Canada geese passing through on their way north and crapping everywhere.
Very interesting that you posted this Dennis, as the wife and I remarked on how quiet the woods are, many times over the past few weeks. we have some birds, but nowhere near normal. One of the strangest things, is that we had Bluebirds here off and on all winter??? They are now setting up shop in the box. We have a few remaining Slate Juncos that will be heading to the north soon. We will see them up to camp and up to Well Seasoned 's place this summer. They winter down here. Oh, and the Phebee's that nest here each year returned.
Still no robins. Heard a sand hill crane a week back and saw two Canada geese but those were just passing through. Dang crows are back and have been for awhile now though.
I know what you mean. Yesterday as I was stacking some wood my wife came back and she also commented on how quiet the woods are for this time of the year. It is really strange as we normally have lots and lots of birds. We still have juncos too but they should be leaving soon.
Most of my winter birds are gone now. I'm starting to see some Cow birds , Robins and Barn owls. Spring is real slow to start here at 5300 ft. with warm days and cold nights.
