Came across a decent sized pile of wood today on my way home. Looks like it has been sitting there for a little while. Thought it looks like Cottonwood, but I thought I would get opinions from the forum. What do you guys think?

Yep. If it is, it's really good for building 50 foot long Privacy Fences

It looks like the rounds I picked up with my neighbor last year. There was a dark brown stringy layer under the heavy bark. It was very light in weight for the size of the rounds.

Third picture from top looks like hickory. Is it heavy?

Didn’t pick it up. Once I looked at it I figured it was probably Cottonwood. There might be a mix of a few other things in there but the vast majority of the pile was the Cottonwood

Third picture does look like hickory- it would be worth culling that out of the pile

I dunno but I think that bottom pic looks like sweet gum. Try splitting a piece.

Third picture still cottonwood. Hickory has thicker bark and doesn't check that bad. Just from one of the younger limbs.
