We're sitting here, it's quiet, then THUMP! We looked at each other, what the? I thought a branch hit the roof, it was loud! Went outside to investigate, nope, nothing on the roof. Continued around to the front, something scurried under my truck. I was able to get closer, eventually went inside and put some welding gloves on. Dawn was gonna call Glen Lucas with fish & game to have him take it to a rehab facility, but it ended up gasping for air, then dying in my hands. The twitching confirmed death, just like chickens.

    Is it a young hawk?

    Yum, both beer & hen!

Is it a young hawk in the picture? I think it is. That's one less predator for my girls

Doesn't seem like a hawk looking at the beak and eyes, but I'm no expert.

My first thought was ruffed grouse-ish. Does it have talons or chicken-like feet?

Ruffed grouse. They're known for flying into windows around here

I thought this at first too, but I see grouse all the time and it doesn't quite match imo. I put gloves on because it had chicken like feet but curved nails. Whatever it is, it was young. Kinda resembles some young hawks or Falcons I've searched online, strange

Female maybe? Is there a certain sex that has the spiked feathers on the head? This one was flat

If it's grouse, I should've processed it before rigamortis set in.

Leaning towards game bird opposed to hawk. Like Chaz I'd expect more of a curve on the beak. What do I know anyway, just comparing it to some bird mounts on the wall above me, it does look like a very big chick.

That sure looks like a female Ruffed Grouse to me. Took a picture of one sitting on our deck rail early one morning, turn around to put the camera away and wham, thing flew straight into the window and died. Eye color, feather pattern, banded tail, looks like a grouse.

Peel off breast, salt and pepper, shove it on a stick, hold stick over fire for about a half hour.

    Best snack ever

Can't help with the ID, but last summer a beautiful Sharp-Shinned Hawk flew into our large picture window, with quite a boom. It fell to the ground, and stopped breathing about a minute later. It's mate hung around calling for a couple of days, and then left.

It saddened me quite a bit.
