Why are people calling Husqvarna... (Aka Husqy/Huski) "Husky"?? For the longest time I thought people meant the brand of tools/equipment Home Depot has (same as Lowes with Kobalt). I figured Home Depot was making saws. Reminds me of a neighbor that would call them Husq-A-van-na. Not a "holier than thou" post, I'm just curious! I just put 2 and 2 together that "Husky" was usually meaning "Husqy"
I always assumed that whether you spelled it with a "y" or plural "ies", pronouncing the shortened version was just using the "dog breed" as their nickname. To me, who was into guns a long time before chainsaws, a Husky meant a Husqvarna Swedish Mauser, as in my signature. Also, as HoneyFuzz said, its a heck of a lot easier to spell correctly!
Comes from the 60's,from their racing dirt bikes.(yes they made motorcycles also).American bikers called them huskys,so the company picked up on it and used it in their advertising, spelled husky and sometimes huskie.Must have just kept carried over to their saws.
Husky = Husqvarna usually but just to confuse you even more, Tractor Supply (Don't think you have them up in AK?) sells a line of equipment labeled "Huskee" and yes, Home Depot sells "Husky" tools and some power equipment as well. And rifles, motorcycles, lawn tractors, mowers, tillers, and a few other things I'm sure I'm not aware of or forgot.
Growing up in mid 70's I remember seeing in related mags that Husqvarna pretty much owned the motocross tracks all over Europe & was gaining favor in America as well.I heard somewhere that they sold the motorcycle division to BMV sometime in the '80s or thereabouts. When Electrolux took over several brands - Partner in late 90's,Jonsered around then, several other unrelated companies were bought out soon afterwards also. Pioneer Saws of Canada merged for a short time with Partner of Sweden,in the late 80's,it was called Pioneer/Partner.Then that was dissolved & the remaining saws were changed to Poulan Pro for the North American market. My old Poulan Pro 475 was a Swedish made beast,77cc & a rebadged Jonsered 2077/Partner 7700,just different colors. Also Husqvarna Construction Products now makes various gas, pneumatic, hydraulic & electric saws, drills & other gear for the concrete, stone & demolition industry.Items that were previous brands such as Target,Partner to name a couple.
They sold a few "super motards" here in the States in recent years as well. Basically a motocross bike with street tires and lights.
Now that's the kind of bike I'd like to get for zipping around "out back" and running NE Ohio roads. The backroads around here really suck in many counties!
I still she husqvarna signs on some shops motorcycle around here not sure if they still sell them or not? I dont care a thing about them.
