Seems like I hang up every other tree nowadays. Was hoping to cut two or three down this afternoon after work. Hung up the first one and could not get it down with the tractor the usual way. So I dug out the snatch block I bought long ago but have never had to use. Hooked it to the small pine tree in the picture and got it to stand up then lowered it back down between the trees. Then back to the splitter and stacks. Well worth the $20.00 at HF.
Nothing like hanging the first one of the day up. You get out thinking I’m gonna get all x number of trees down and Murphy steps in early.
I hate when that happens! I cut two small sugar maples in my processing area in January and hung em both up. Dontcha love it when a small investment pays off big!
Here’s a pic of how I hooked it up. If you zoom in you can see the gray winch rope then the yellow strap I used to hook the snatch block to the pine. This worked out better than I thought it would. Stood it up straight then winched back down .
I've found that if I try to get the tree I'm felling, snagged in a tree, that it doesn't. LOL It happens. at least you've got a nice tractor to fix it.
Put a chain around the bottom and give them a pull. Those small ones you can do with your car or truck and sometimes a lawn tractor. Sometimes if you are lucky and strong enough you can pull them down by hand. Sometimes you can just grab hold of them about waist height, give a slight lift as you walk toward the bottom and they will come right down.
We couldn't push it, so I cut 4 ft from the bottom, but it just stayed standing, just 4 ft shorter. So, I cut another 4 ft and down it went. It landed in a good place. I wound up with some nice dry oak!
That's the way I end up doing most of the time and it works well but I hate to advise people to do it. On that size they certainly are not normally a problem but bigger can be and I do not want to see anyone get hurt.
That’s how I do it too most of the time. Often on hangers I have to cut until it’s vertical again, then it’s a quandary because the bottom will want to kick out as soon as the top moves if you make another cut. Better off at that point trying real hard to pull it over rather than make that cut. That’s a great score! Perfect size and flavor!
I do it the same way as Backwoods Savage said but usually dont advise it for the same reason. Nice score and glad it went safe.
Nah, you're good...until you've accidentally boobie trapped one of your trails with a dozen cedars I don't think you can claim that title...
