Though JBWeld is awesome stuff and so is PC7 epoxy, I would think just gluing the head to the shaft would be sure to break within a couple strikes. I once used JB Weld in combination with some fiberglass matting I got my hands on and it was very strong used as tape. Problem here is you have no place other than the axe head to wrap the impregnated fiberglass tape around which would not work for splitting. I guess you can try the glue as others have mentioned and hope for the best. If you do share the results with us.

I probably wont try to fix it. Just finished filling out the claim and emailed it. Very simple. Ill use the head as a wedge. Its nice and light weight. I thought of you yesterday. Drove by a cemetery and saw a cut up red oak! Even if i did try top get it it was on a grassy hill with no pavement close to it. Guess im not dying to get!

I’d use the fixed one. I use JB to “bed” actions into stocks on benchrest guns. No screws, no fasteners just JB. Also fixed the handle on my homemade picaroon with it. One of those cheap fiberglass handled hatchet conversions. Small fiberglass shaft with a rubberized epoxy poured around it. Turns out that rubberized epoxy wasn’t strong enough and it came apart. Got the rubber out and used JB. Holding just fine. If anything breaks it will be that skimpy fiberglass shaft.

Course you should only swing one at a time so your good anyway ;)

did you have a picaroon head laying around or did you make it? The Collins axe i rehandled a couple weeks ago was going to be cannibalized into a picaroon, but when i started chopping with it i liked it so it stays as an axe. I have some extra handles around and would like to make one, having never owned one. Got pics?

Pics are gone from the puter but here goes. This was before I broke it. Have since become more accustomed to using it. Won’t leave home without it actually. Still requires learning on all types of wood just where best to stab the round. I use it to pick rounds I normally couldn’t lift. My back doesn’t like the weight from ground scenario. Get it up a bit and things are better.
Just found out this winter that green frozen wood is not it’s favorite.
    Pickaroon or aberration

I didnt think to try it today as i was splitting some red maple this afternoon. I had stacked the rounds and the ends were checking so it was tough with the Collins.

How are you feeling? How goes the recovery?

Went to their website, filled out all the info and submitted, bit later got an email asking for a photo of length to determine model (i knew it was the X27 but only had the pic of the axe head) Sent them another pic, got another email later today saying they will mail replacement!
:yes:That was easy! Wish other claims were like that!

Thanks for this thread! How far did the axe head fly? I always assumed my x27 is built the same as a steel handle estwing hammer, just covered in plastic. Going to take same precautions as if splitting with a wooden handle tool from now on, as in where the head will fly if the handle breaks.

actually it didnt fly. It had a crack in the plastic parallel to the handle behind the head. It later developed another perpendicular to the handle starting from blade side. I honestly think it was from me hitting it like a wedge when it got stuck in a split/round. I have a tendency to beat the h$%l out of my axes. Funny thing was before it broke i noticed the crack was more noticeable and maybe 3 whacks later the head stuck in the split and handle released without it, much to my surprise.
I was surprised by the casting of the head as i was under the impression if was constructed the same with the metal going down into the handle. I want to peel off the remaining plastic on the head to see if it has an eye socket. Tough plastic whatever it is.

$49 for the X27 is a good price if its the 36" handle. I had the X25 and ended up losing it. Both are very good axes and you wont be disappointed. Very popular with FHC members from what ive seen.

Im feeling really good, i have 2 more weeks of Iv in the rehab center. I went to boston the other day and they were bery pleased with how i was doing. So April 3rd im a free man. Iv been able to do 45 mins on a stationary bike and started using light weights. I cannot wait to just go walk in the woods. When i went to boston it was my first time out in like 35 days and i couldnt stop looking at trees. Thank you very much for asking.

Thats wonderful news! I cant imagine being away from even being able to walk in the woods for an extended period. Id be looking at trees myself! Guess its something only a wood hoarder would understand! You will be back to your old (well middle aged) self in no time. Can PT incorporate a chain saw into your therapy? If not, maybe an axe?:axe:
