Today was a nice day my oldest, Tommy and I cut load. It will be the last time a snow machine can be used until winter. We unloaded right onto the splitter, saved at least one time of handling. At 10 he is turning into a good hand, he is proud of his work today. He likes to tell everyone that wood going in the stove is what He and Dad cut.
Things are melting big time around here. Today we got up to 16c/60f! Thats crazy warm for this time of year. The sun was out and the snow was melting. Ive ice fished 3 out of 6 days this last week but I think Im done for the season. The lakes are still good but I have other things I should be doing this week. -1c/30f at the moment with doug fir in the box. Im just doing evening fires the last little bit and letting the furnace take over some light lifting during the day.
We are expecting our first 50f since November 1st. I am gearing up for spring panfishing and gardening despite the fact that people are still ice fishing around here, and I can't yet see any soil in my garden areas.
Wood, wood, everywhere! Great that Tommy is taking pride in making firewood! It's funny, drudgery or accomplishment, it's a matter of perspective. If you can't use the snow machines anymore, does that mean no more birch harvesting?
30 and 78, plenty of melting yesterday and in the 40’s. Bracing for the big rain starting this evening into Saturday. With all the snow pack flooding is a given in a lot of places. Spring in Maine! Not far behind will be the black flies.
The weather guy says an inch of rain, clearing out early Friday and in the 50's, so Friday won't be a washout, yay! I'm still having warm-up-the-basement-for-the-cat fires, mostly maple, with a little birch and oak. I'll probably keep that up as long as morning temps are in the 20's and 30's. I got my chores done yesterday, the tarps are fixed, the pool level is down a foot, and I got all the sugar maple split and stacked. Now I really need to switch gears to spring cleanup. It's hard to stop making firewood though.
Upper 20's greeting me this morning. I checked my snow level in the yard and am sitting at 25". Picked up an inch yesterday, so what? It'll be gone today as sun and mid 40's are what the guessers are thinking.
Wow I'm warmer than NH mountain man . 35 out with rain to snow 6 to 10 inches by Saturday nite. 70s inside cherry and ash..
You beat us on both counts. We didn't get much rain or snow. Just something about this area that most rain and snow misses us.
Rope you can be proud of that young man. Let us all hope he keeps on feeling the way he does and he'll make a fine man. I love to see wood piled right after it has been split. Here are a couple I like: If I remember right the picture on top got some more added to it and ended up being around 9 cord. The picture on the bottom was around 15 cord. I have not split much wood though since our GTG as the guys usually get most of it done. But I still have some stacking to do from last year. That is shameful but it happens every so often. I'll get caught up this year though.
Was foggy this morning. A bit cooler and cloudy. Not sure if I'll cut any wood today or not. Have a few other jobs waiting for me plus need to finish the pruning and that might take a few days, especially the fruit trees. Looking up really does bad things to my neck so can't do much at one time.
Not too bad this morning, -6 c or 22 f, and heading for +7 c or 45 f later today. That's a few degrees north of normal!
No Ma’am, we will be switching to 4 wheelers to transport vs the snow machine. The birch I was getting is only accessible by snow machine. I will need to buy another timber sale for birch in a dry access area, where I can use the wheelers.
Dropped down to 32.7 °F last night with freezing rain. They say it's going to warm up to 49 °F with partly cloudy skies. Juniper in the stove with pics of the ice on the roof and back deck before it melts.
I let the fire go out this am. We have roofers at that area of the house today. Plus it wasn't cold enough to bother with a reload. Well have a fire tonight and tomorrow night though. Then it is vacation time. No fire needed then. Although... I might bring some wood down if there's a fire pit... Gotta check the vrbo listing.
He loves getting to use a ax and skin up the bottom of the spruce. So I can get to trunk, finish skinning and fell the tree. We didn’t get as much done yesterday as I hoped, when we go to where we park. We don’t cross the ice bridge, not enough room to turn the truck and trailer around easily. I has not been plowed in over a month, so we find a pickup stuck right at the edge of the river. Took a while to get them out. Then Tommy is taking interest in the felling process. Explaining then showing the process in steps, discussing, making cuts....eats up time. He’s sharp and is willing to listen so I teach.
That sounds great Tom. I miss our kids as we had some good times cutting wood. Especially loved it when we used the buzz saw. But, sunshine on the horizon as our oldest son may be moving back and we have a place already picked out for him to build on.
