Finally some dry weather and time off work to chip away at the blown down trees from last fall. There's some 30" diameter oak and about 20" diameter hickory in there.
those big uns can be a pain to move, but they make lots of splits real fast. Seems like a lot of the wood ive scrounged in the last 18 months has been larger diameter. Must be a sign from the wood gods or something! Nice looking wood though!
Looking good mike bayerl Great firewood. Yep buZZsaw BRAD I always thought that it was a sign I needed bigger saws. As soon as I got a saw to pull a 3' bar I got into a 4' tree & on it goes. Now 16" to 24" stuff looks like kindling LOL. I shoulda stayed with a small saw, these big trees are killing me.
I had just the 290 with a 16" bar and and a husky 334T saw then like i said 18 months ago the flood of big wood started. A year ago i bought a used 460 powerhead for $40 purely by chance. 20", 28', 36' bars plus a couple repairs and its a decent saw. I cut up the white oak trunk from last weeks "oakee dokee" post with it today and im still in awe of its power. I cant imagine a 660 or 880! My avatar pic is from last Sept when i felled a white oak with the 36" bar. Largest tree i ever cut down. Bar didnt quite make it thru at stump height.
Yep, those big ones are always a rush when they hit the ground! After that the fun's over & the work starts.
Brad, I cut with a 16" bar for many, many moons. I wore out a pro McCullough saw and then cut with a Stihl 290 for 15 years or so before being gifted a nice Stihl 261 last year. One can do a lot with a small saw; it just sometimes takes a little longer but the job can still get done. I even cut some 42" once with the STihl 290 and 16" bar. Had to cut out a pretty good sized notch a few times to get it done, but the job did get done. Fortunately it was an ash.
But let's face it. You still enjoy the work. Now you not only love the crash when the tree falls but also love the sound of a ported saw.
Ha! Ya got busted Brad. You had 24 & 36' instead of the " sign. Indicates a 36 foot bar. Just us pickin on ya, we knew what you meant.
