Last year I found the chimney top plate had a major sealant leak. This is the piece of metal that seals the clay chimney liner to the stainless liner at the very top of the chimney.

I grabbed some sealant from HD but realize now it is recommended for indoor use only.

What should I be buying? I think this leak was the reason for more creosote buildup than the past even though our wood was c/s/s the longest so far at 2+ years. Working on the three year plan currently.

Got any pics? Have you considered putting a cap over the top of the whole thing? Something like this:

Any silicone (pure silicone not part latex). I use the stuff that says Rain ready in 3hrs. At the top of the chimney you don't really need to worry about high temp. This is what I used. http://www.caulkyourhome.com/ge-silicone-II-window-and-door.php

That type of cap would be what I would do were I to do it over. More surface area would promote less buildup on the mesh, which is where mine clogs first. What I get off the cap is by far worse than the liner.

However... I am cheap, and I am working with what I've got, so a tube of the right stuff is what is in my budget. "Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without."

I hear ya.. I have the same setup as you do.... Don't even have a legitimate cap on the chimney. I used one that was too small for the 11"x15" clay flue tile and then cut piece of flashing to cover it... Lathered it up with regular silicone caulk and put it in place.. So far so good... Haven't noticed any leaks..

I'm going to go with the cap pictured above this year since it will help to prevent weathering of the top of the chimney. Additionally, I have a double sided fireplace with a wood stove in one side. With the size of my flue, I think I can run another flue liner up there for a pellet stove or another wood stove on the other side...

    good luck..

I need to get some of that stuff you paint on the top of the chimney to protect mine. But Yea just outdoor pure silicone. I think all silicone is good to 500+f.

Cut some of the meat out of your cap bit thats where mine clogs first as well
