IMG_4155.JPG IMG_4155.JPG View attachment 202680 Went to split this oak round (if you can call it round) from my recent score and realized it was shaped like a mushroom! How often do you see something like that! If you look close there is actually two mushrooms growing on the right side of the log! View attachment 202680

I don't know how many BTU'S mushrooms have, but I am burning a not 100% prime piece of sugar maple now that had some fungus amongus. It's keeping the house warm. That's what I know.

This tree was hit by lightning years ago from what i was told. It didnt put leaves out last year and died. Maybe 5% punky. Do you save the punky and burn or toss them?

I've always just ignored it unless ants were calling it home, then the apartments get cut off, usually in the splittah.
The really soft punk is like a sponge so unless it is top covered and kept dry that might be another reason to slough it off. If there's a lot of it. Or not. Thick sections take a while to dry out in the Winter if you're not inclined to toss a big chunk of ice in the stove in January.

I save them provided they stay dry. They just don't burn as long.
