If the tree is near a power line, they the power company, have taken two down for us at no cost. Nice score.

That's a lot of toilet paper. That's what that looked like to me at first. Lol

All we need is milk and eggs and we are bomb polar vortex proof!

Ground is soft. Shady areas snowy/frozen yet. I was surprised the yard had as much snow. I can drive right up, but wont if ground muddy. The white oak is in back and may have to wait til ground is dry enough. I was offered to store wood on sight, i will C/S on sight, may be month or two before i get it out.

the lines to his house were close enough to the red that a big limb came down in December and took them out. He asked me about felling both of them last Fall. I had initially agreed to the white, but backed out as im not a tree service and it was close enough to structures.

Sounds painful. Instead of using your hand to split it, try a maul or splitting axe!

These trees are why you need a big ported saw.

Just south of Hartford; in Newington. If I recall correctly, I think I saw a reference in another thread that you are located somewhere in the southern part of the state.

i had the 28" bar on the 460 today and it had no problem cutting the biggest oak. Was running it with the 20" yesterday as well as the 290 with the 16" bar Ive only had the 460 for a year. The last 18 months more large diameter hardwood has been available to me. Seems like a sign from the wood gods to get a bigger saw and the 460 powerhead was dropped into my lap for $40. Dont use it a lot and the power of it still amazes me. I was pretty much a one saw man til i got it. The 290 is still my go to saw for now. When i took a break today i was thinking what a 660 or 880 would be like, let alone a ported 460!
Im in North Haven. It should say "Southern Connecticut" under my avatar. There's a few other in the state ive chatted with. Great forum!

In the last 18 months more large diameter hardwood has been made available to me than in the last several years combined. Seems like a sign from the wood gods to get a bigger saw and the 460 powerhead was dropped into my lap for $40. Dont use it a lot and the power of it still amazes me. I was pretty much a one saw man til i got it. The 290 is still my go to saw for now and the highest CC saw ive owned. When i took a break today i was thinking what a 660 or 880 would be like, let alone a ported 460! I can see havind a ported 261 when i get one. I may do a muffler mod on the 290 just to see the difference.
oops didnt realize i responded to 2 different guys at once. Whats your opinion on doing that to the 290...port & mod? I really like the 261 as far as weight.
Do you know if he sells saws on ebay? I was browsing the other njght and saw a super tweaked 461 from Michigan and it sounded like his work from what ive seen?

That’s a question for huskihl, or other motor builder. The even numbers are pro saws, if I was in that boat I don’t think I would do the 290. Me personally I would sent the 460, big saw for big trees. And use the 290 for limbs smaller trees. You should look for a Get To Gather close by and see what a ported saw is all about. I can tell you I waited a while thinking I really did not need a ported saw. I was wrong, I should have went that route long ago. They will do the work so much faster. Another thing to look at is square grind chain. Between the two you will make a cut so much faster.

ive split most of the red oak and the heartwood is still pretty green. The bark is loose and came off on impact and/or when i split it. I imagine the smaller rounds may be able to be burned late next winter if need be.
