Not maple, ash, box elder or dogwood because it doesn’t have opposite branching.

I am thinking Butternut, Juglans Cinera. The bark looks quite similar.

I think Mr. Finn gets the prize as well. I have not seen one of those although they are native to my area. Cool bark.

Not butternut. Butternut has a dark heart, almost like walnut or cottonwood. I have a few of them around. I've cut a lot of basswood, have two big ones right next to my house, this is absolutely basswood.

When i cut the top last year i almost didnt keep it as it was too light. plenty of oak ash and maple available to me. I was really surprised at how nice it burned in her fireplace. She will get the rest next winter...only she lives almost 2 hours away and i have to bring it.

Yes. That's why it looks like black walnut, at least the bark.

    mr.finn for the win

The dark heart isn't apparent in younger trees. Usually don't see that under 16" diameter specimens around here.

The tree was maybe 12" at stump level. Wood was very, very wet and "spit" upon impact from the axe. When seasoned it was feather light. I almost left it to rot!

I'm going with Jon_E , I have a bunch of Basswood out back that I don't often cut. That was my first thought when I saw it.

BASSWOOD!!! Aka Linden. cuts easy. splits like a dream. seasons quick, like silver maple. grab a piece of bark at the end and pull it. if it easily pulls off a strip all the way up the log. its basswood.
