scored these two oaks, red pin oak 33" CHD, white oak 24" CHD from the neighbor of a fellow hoarder. He had asked me to fell them which I declined. Red was hollow at stump level and close to power lines. White was close to gazebo and house. Tree service cut em down this morning and i spent a couple hours this afternoon cutting the red. Both were victims of the gypsy moth caterpillars and didnt put leaves out last year. They shattered most of the branches off which makes my job easier! Bark on red was partly stripped on impact.

Just started the cutting....mebbe 3 -4 hours yet. Used the two saws and neither burned thru a full tank to my surprise. Not looking forward to splitting it all by hand though! Lotsa noodle logs on the red oak!

Yeah the tops shatter and the branches aren’t worth much. The trunks are usually still nice tho. Great score.

Nice score! Can you back your truck right up to the wood or do you have to carry it to the driveway? I imagine the ground is getting soft in Conn.

Great score, seeing that the trees were dying what do think about drying time after you split/stack?

That will keep you busy for awhile! I hope it's close to home? That's a few trips to haul them off. Don't try to pick up the big rounds, use the roll up stairs method to get them in your truck. IMG_20190313_063641504_HDR.jpg

Cool technique, ive never tried that before. Ive"flip flopped" 4' or longer logs into the truck or roll up a 2x10 ramp. In this case im able to C/S and maybe even stack on sight. My wood hoarding friend lives next door and i have some CSS wood there already The plan was to add this to the pile (no pun intended). I live ten minutes away and may bring a truckload or two home. Back yard is starting to mud up even with snow cover so the white oak in the back yard may be there for a while.

The trees are dead enough to lose bark, but sapwood still is meaty. The red may peel most of the bark when i process (right on site). My friend who lives next door will take all the skinnies. The backyard where the white is will be muddy for sometime...water table is high there so the ground is squishy a lot. I was supposed to cut the white down for him back in December as i wanted the ground frozen to fell it, but ended up getting cold feet (no pun intended) as it was close enough to his house and next to a gazebo. I had felled another dead white oak in January for him. The woods behind him and my friend has over a dozen huge dead white oaks. No easy way to get them out though.
