The scratches on the piston are all clustered around the plating failure, not spread across the full width of the exhaust port, so I suspect mechanical abrasion from plating flakes rather than typical scoring.

Even with the cost of a new top end, that's still a good deal. 359's do very well with their resale value.

As I was reading the thread, I couldn't help but think of all the great "You Suck' deals that you have gotten. You have had some very good luck, on some very good saws, at very good prices. This one is no exception. .

A little time and money and you'll turn a good buck on it.

As for the plating, I would say that was a fluke event. Maybe look for a nice OEM cylinder on eBay, or other related sites?

I never heard of any carb saying that it had to be "X" number of turns and not to mess with it? Some manufacturers put a "starting point", but all saws need to be tuned. When you buy a new saw, the dealer fuels it up, then takes it outside and tunes it. But anything that is carbureted needs tuned. Whether its changing jets in large carbs, or adjusting L and H screws on 2 stroke carbs. Even 4 stroke carbs have an air adjustment (larger carbs/ATV's for example).

I can't disagree, I have gotten very lucky a few times. As to this one, I just ordered an aftermarket top end from Weedeaterman, plus a handful of smaller parts from other sources to complete the picture. A couple of the parts are "special order" and will take a while to come in, but I should be able to put this together in a few weeks and be quite happy with it. The rest of the saw is in nice condition.

The top end I ordered is a Raisman brand kit, which I hadn't heard of before but which seems to have a good rep on Another Site. We'll see.

Unless there is aluminum transfer to go with the plating (and not just scratches/scoring) then I suspect a QC issue with the plating process as well.

I'm talking the starting point settings on a new stihl for example. If it says 1 turn out its usually is unless the saw is worn, or modded. There is actually some pretty wide variation on some sales that still run fine. Others will flood out at idle with an 1/8 turn at idle wrong.

The special-ordered parts arrived this morning, and now it's assembled and running. I had to borrow the B&C from my 350 because it's the only small-mount Husky bar I have. Seems to do pretty well considering it's a .325 chain (had to borrow the 350's clutch, too, because I didn't have an appropriate rim sprocket).

Sounds like its fat...or bogging up real bad before you even hit the wood...maybe its cause it waseny warm, maybe thats why it as so smokey as well. Or maybe its just you have not modded the muffler yet? OR maybe its cause I am now use to hearing gutted mufflers and big saws.

The smoke is exaggerated by the way the sun is hitting it, but I probably do have it set a bit rich. These were the first cookies I cut with it, so I erred to the safe side with the initial adjustment. I don't have a tach, and am not super-confident yet in my ability to tune by ear.

Sounds good for a Husq to me. Could be a little leaner, but it clears up good in wood.

I'll try leaning it out a bit during the week, but too many of my close neighbors are at home for me to be running saws much on the weekend.

Tangentially, I'm really happy with that folding sawbuck. It's light and easy to move around, and I have even thrown it in the car and taken it with me to a scrounge site for bucking smaller stuff.

For the record, Clem was absolutely right. I've got the carb dialed in a lot better now, largely thanks to having borrowed Dex's tachometer at the G2G. I checked the RPM's on a few other saws at the same time and found I'd tuned the others pretty well by ear, but I missed the mark on this one.

    Makes me want a tach.

Is that a split or a quartered log?

Yeah, I split a 6' piece into quarters. It was down in a little ravine, I couldn't haul it out whole and I was thinking of cutting some of it into boards so that was my solution.
