Hoping someone can help me figure out what this is. The entire tree cam down and its not going to be easy to get out so trying to decide if its worth the effort.

I thought I had a picture of the main trunk, but I guess I forgot to take one. Cut this piece of branch off and sawed it in half on my bandsaw.

It does look like ash. The cutaway grain looks like typical dead ash when split. Did it have a rootball or did the roots seem rotted? The snapped off part of the limb you pictured looks like a characteristic ash snap off. Lots of them dying off round these parts...victims of the EWB beetle. Tree dies, no leaves, gradually loosing twigs, limbs, branches until just a dead stalk which will rot from the ground up and eventually fall over. The wood closest to the ground will be too punky but a few feet up the meat is better. How hard will it be to retrieve? Judging from the piece you pictured there is good meat left.

I was thinking ash initially but didn't see any of the EWB holes in the main trunk. I will try to get some more pictures when I am out there again. The main trunk snapped off 5-6 feet above the ground. It had a wicked bend in the trunk where it broke, The way its fell most of the wood is off the ground, which is good but also makes it tough and dangerous to get too. Several trees are bent over and pinned underneath it and it has a really dense canopy of small branches I am going to need to clean out in order to get access.

Yes ash. The lighter parts are still green wood and the brown parts are dead.
