Yep, like the guy who told his wife he wanted to be buried with all his money.
A year later, someone asked his wife if she obeyed his last wishes. She replied “oh yes, I put a check in the exact amount in his suit pocket!”.

My wife and were both born and raised in Minnesota. All our relatives were born and raised here going back to our great grandparents who were immigrants. I have roots in NE MN in mining exploration and mining engineering, and my wife's roots are from farming in SW MN.

As a boy we moved to Hawaii for a few years and I attended 6th and 7th grade there. After two years, my mother and father, and all 6 of us kids wanted to move back to MN for our extended family, and four distinct seasons.

My wife and I have though of selling off our primary residence here in the suburbs of Mpls and moving to our homestead land and cabin in far NE MN on the north shore of Lake Superior where our three children were born and raised. But that is not going to happen soon because our parents are aging and our children are living near us, including two boys still in college, and our daughter and her husband expecting their first child (our first grandchild). Our dream now is, God willing, keeping both homes and spending more and more time up north in retirement.

Born in Illinois, childhood in upstate NY, teen years in Washington DC, college in Indiana. Then my fist job was at UVA in Charlottesville. It was a little poky for me, so after visiting my brother who was going to school in Boston, I decided to move up there. I worked there for awhile, met my first husband and we moved to southern NH, after we split I met my second husband here, and I've been here ever since. My town is an hour away from Boston, an hour away from the ocean, and an hour plus from the mountains. It's pretty here, and life has a slower pace than in the city. I raised my son here, and he stuck around the area and brought his wife here. My brother and his wife are local too. The biggest factor was my mom moving to Boston after her second husband died. She became my responsibility more and more as she grew older. She's been gone less than a year, and I'm still figuring out what I want to do with the rest of my life, but moving isn't it.

Grandparents, Great Grandparents and Great Great Grandparents all lived within 2 miles of where I live now. Still own part of the farm that has been in the family since 1867.

Business is at the same place I was born and raised.
My next move will be 6 feet down!

Other than three semesters in the center of Pennsylvania, I've lived within an hour of where I was born.
Of course 13 years of that was two states away, in Maine, where I would still rather be. You can get to Maine in a few minutes from the northeast corner of Massachusetts.

I travel a lot for work in the northeast US, I would like to live in the Burlington Vermont area for the weather, or central PA where my wife is from, for the people.

I'm stuck in the last place I wanted to move back to because I'm the pastor of the church where my hippie parents were born again, married and started a family in the early 70s.
Until I was given that responsibility by my Jewish carpenter boss, we were happy in Maine.

My wife is from a small town in the center of PA where she sort of knew most of the people, and was related to a bunch distantly. She actually likes living in the city better than the country.

very good advice!!!! this would be a good time to clarify. I work 3-6 months a year. then the rest is "me" time.... so while I totally agree with your point. I must point out that "in a way" I'm living it. ... or at least "I think so?" but I'm open to suggestions?

I went through all sorts of emotions before taking the plunge into retirement. We can’t, or don’t want to move yet due to family, mostly.
The part I don’t understand about moving is how to pick up and go to a new town where you don’t know anyone, local issues, etc. How do you pick a new place to live?
Suppose you pick the wrong one? I don’t hate winter yet but someday keeping up a house and land, not to mention the woodpile, will get to be too much.

Born and raised in.the same area of north east MA. I haven't had the chance to live in other areas of the New England. We are here for family first, losely followed by job opportunities and excellent hospitals and Doctors.

We like the changing seasons, two hours from the mountains 1 hr from Boston, half hour from seacoast. Lots of conservation land in our county and very rich in history, particularly first period colonial right up through the industrial revolution. We are minutes from the NH border, so we are a good distance from the political climate of the Boston area. We are not far from major interstates for travelling and shopping is not far either. Sure, there are nicer areas to live, but we have to weigh out a few things.

This is just where it's at for me. I don't suppose I couldn't move somewhere else, I'm plenty talented to be able to find work just about anywhere I guess. But I also don't have any strong reasons to leave. A change of scenery sounds nice every now and then, but you tend to get over that and get back into the grind of life after a while. Then it's just I live here instead of there, but I'm still me with all the same luggage as I was when I was there. I like to think that I'm pretty content with who/what/where I am because it's all only temporary anyways.
If I were to pick a reason to stay the strongest by far would be family, what do you do without them? I like seeing family regularly, it would be a pain to have to schedule and travel to spend time with family.

I had an idea that when I finally retire and we can schedule it, to pick a town and rent a place for 3 or 4 months just to see what the area is like. Our country of Canada is so diverse that just making a trip across it will only scratch the surface of each place you visit. I had thought of moving to the East coast for a year but some of the winters you have been getting lately has me rethinking that idea.

Family and business is keeping me here for now. That's about to change in the next 2-4 years.
Grew up here and the biggest thing that has changed the area/people is the drug epidemic. I've been in business 31 years and know a lot of people . It gets aggravating when a simple grocery store trip turns into a 4 hour ordeal just because everyone that knows you wants to talk and crazy to think that you haven't seen someone for a month and all of the sudden when they see you in the store they need your services tomorrow (ever heard of a phone??) .I carry a small note pad in my pocket everywhere I go.
Ironic this thread came up. My GF and I just took a road trip to southern OH Sat/Sun to eyeball some areas for a potential retirement homestead and look at some equipment.

Whenever we moved, we made it a rule to rent for at least 6 months as that gave us more time to look and decide where we wanted to live.

    Not,,, that far south.
I'm mainly looking to get out of the snow belt and away from the Great Lakes which makes for crap weather year round. The last 5 months I think we've had 15 days of sun tops. Depressing

Born here, raised here, probably gonna die here. I've been about everywhere for work and vacation in the lower 48 and never got the itch to move there. Cost of living is low, family is close by, 4 distinct seasons, good hunting, no traffic....etc.
