I found this in my yard when I went home for lunch. Red oak. It was marked with a mingo before it got cut up so it looks to be pretty consistent 16” pieces. Looks like a good start on replacing what was burnt up this winter. I got some splitting to do.

Nice. For sure it would be nice to have an anonymous donor drop that on my doorstep.

Yes, probably somewhere between 1/2 and 2/3 cord.

Not quite anonymous. I told him about a month ago that I had made space. Just didn’t know a load was coming today.

That's quite a difference in color between the sapwood and the heartwood. I haven't seen one quite that colorful here yet. Except for maybe when the sapwood was punk, but that looks solid.
    Nice get.

Got it all split today. 2 loose rows, 10’ long rising to about 5’ in the middle. Call it 2/3 of a cord. It turned out to be a twisted grain yard tree. The kind that is a PITA to split and stack. No straight square bolts for end cribbing at all. I’ll move it to the back when the yard dries out. It’s way too wet now.

grain doesnt look too twisted, but nice stacks all in all. At least the lengths were consistent.
I hate when i go to split and the grain is twisted. There is one variety of red oak around here that the grain twists, even in the woods.
Muddy here too. I worked in my processing area today and it was sloppy. Melted a lot of the 2-3 " of snow we had yesterday.

Yeah I get those oaks that grow all crooked. I have to match up and spoon splits to get more than just a couple of them in the stove.

PITA with a small stove. Can't use them for overnight burns for sure. Too many voids.
