Had a friend cut a tree down as well as had some saw logs he never got to. Went out yesterday afternoon and started cutting them up. My cutting buddy had a hardly used Stihl 380 magnum 2, same length bar and same chain and the 362 blew it away. The tree company was owned by a friend so they cribbed all the logs so we could get at them easier but we still had to use a come along to roll the logs to get to the backsides. It seems the cutting will be the easiest part of this firewood adventure. We split up a good load for my friend of the saw logs and I will go back today and noodle the other rounds and finish on the splitter at home . Sledge and wedge is for the birds even though once halved they split kinda ok with a maul. Talk about pitchy firewood. It was spread like butter in old stress cracks within the saw logs. If I understand correctly that is why the owner abandoned them. Should get a few cords out this!
The 362 is a runner! I have one with a 16" combo on it and it sings in a very high voice! Have fun with that saw!
I Love my 362. New billet bar last year, New spark plug this year. Aside from tapping the air filter clean and sharpening chains, that's all I've done in five years. Probably seen fifty cord or so in that time.
Nice work in some big wood with the 362! I’m considering getting a 362 c... why? Well CAD and I want a auto tune saw. Metalcutter, Is the weight difference very noticeable between your 260 and 362. I’m wondering if I’ll be able to comfortably trim and limb with the 362 and feel and buck 20” without changing out saws.
The 260 is definitely a lighter, narrower and more nimble saw. I have a 20" bar on the 260 and a 25" light weight bar on the 362 so can't compare them directly but I would say that a 362 with a 20" bar would be about as close to an all around saw as one could find. Plenty of snort for bucking and nimble enough for all other tasks. Just going to a shorter bar makes a huge difference. When I switched to a 20" from 25" on my 391 it felt like I was driving a sports car and the 391 is a tank compared to the 362!
And to add to Backwoods comment, noodle those logs before cutting them to length, then they fall in halves instead of having to wrestle them back to the standing position.
We did indeed have a cant hook. It was laying around there somewhere. That's what I used to turn the rounds upright to noodle them but the logs were just to heavy for one peavey especially when you were rolling over a big knot or protrusion.
That thought had occurred to me but never having done it that way before I didn't want to try it and find myself in a jackpot with those big logs. On your advice I will certainly give it a whirl next time on these logs. I don't have lots of experience with very large logs and every bit of advice helps. I got a nice load for myself yesterday. Some of the quarters were almost too much to lift into the trailer. All I know is that I have muscle aches in places that I didn't even know I had muscles.
Started to process the load I got day before yesterday. Should get just under a cord. Very tight grained and full of limb knots so should be high BTUs. Not the prettiest stack though. Sure packed the quarters tight in the trailer. A couple were just about all I could handle lifting into the trailer. Backwoods Savage I will get a bottle of Geritol before finishing the processing and getting another load!
Next Time I'll skip the spinach and Geritol and just hire my Buddies strapping young Son to help us with the big uns or just noodle/split them into eighths. Figured it took 13.5 rounds to yield one cord of processed wood!
Looks like very productive work. Great looking clean wood. Those big rounds are definitely a challenge, but you are getting it done. It seems I come up with a way to make things easier about the time I finish a task. Can’t tell you how many times I had wished I had a simple plastic wedge at the cutting site before I finally remembered to put a couple on the quad. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Nice thread, big wood, and plenty of it, plus a discussion on the MS 362. Which I have had my eye on......
