Hello All, I am typically not a shy person and I have no trouble bluntly asking things, so I wanted to see how y’all feel. We live out in the country and my neighbor, who I have only met once, has a few huge branches down. Is it rude/weird to ask him permission to clean it up and take the wood? Would you just ring his doorbell and ask permission? I am itchin’ to get after all that wood with my Stihl! Thanks! -Sean
Hi Sean, yes i would ask, as long as he understands what you will/wont be doing. Ive gone so far to offer to sign a waiver. (never had to) I usually dont ask to cut up limbs/trees etc. It is a common sight in these parts to see remnants of a tree removal next to the road. State or town cutting doing the work to whicj ive deemed. Worst thing he could say is "NO"!? Good choice on the Stihl!
Yep, go ask. Might say yes, might say no, but without asking you'll never know. Yeah, if he wants money for it, walk away...unless it's $10 and worth it to you.
Well you all may like a quick conclusion - he couldn’t have been happier for me to offer and he said yes. Said he had been working to get it clear - having his buddies over to cut/burn/drink. I’ll have to leave him a sixer for his generosity!!
When you leave him a six pack also have a refrigerator magnet with your name, phone number and wood cutter on it so it stays in his mind.
Sean Easterly , nice job & score! I'm not afraid to ask either, I make it clear that I'll respect property etc. Always call to let them know when I'll be there & show up when I say. Simple courtesy goes a long way with folks. Now do a good job for this fella & let him know you'd be happy to do similar work for his friends. That's how I got started cutting private property years ago & now have more to cut than I could burn in a lifetime. Hard to tell for sure in the pics, but I'm guessing Elm. Well done!
Nice score. A bit of work in a tangle, but decent wood. First pic looks like maple, second pic looks like elm, fourht pic looks like red oak, other hard to tell. Best of luck with your score and neighbor!
Welcome Sean Easterly - You’re gonna like it here, I guarantee it. We like pics, dogs and beer. We also like spending your money on accoutrements to enhance your addiction,,,er, uh, I meant hoard. Lots of great folks here willing to lend advice or a hand. You clearly embody out of the gate the hoarder way. Glad the neighbor was receptive and as stated above may lead to a steady stream of wood in the hood for you moving forward. Nice to meet you
