Tailgates; who'da thought that would be the next big battleground

Most new trucks have tailgate assist pistons that reduce the weight for opening and closing. Hell some even have power assisted open and close tailgates Just like minivan doors

 

its hard to get a round bale in a minivan though...

I'm picturing a little ice on that step and my shin being scraped to the bone as it slides forcefully along the edge of the bumper.

 

WOW... what is that... like a gazillion lb load on the rear springs... the front is prolly 2 feet in the air...

That's about the best possible outcome.

Now GM's new built in side step into the bed looks more promising.
Some sort of handle to grab would be good as well since all these trucks are over 5' tall at the bed.

 

That spot always rusted out anyway.

There was a few times I cringed hoping I didn't snap my tailgate off or bust a cable loading 4 wheelers and things into the bed.
My tailgate wasn't one of those that could be easily lifted off to put the ramps on the bed rather than the tailgate.

 

Wasnt it just a few years ago that GM had Howie Long making fun of Fords having a step on the gate?

 

...and aluminum bodies.....and turbo truck engines....
