New truck shopping

So what are your honest opinions of newer Nissan Titans?

Tbh I never really looked at them much. They check off a lot of boxes and the barely used ones are considerably less $$ than the other brands.

In not looking at an XD, but v8 5.6 liter 7 spd crew cabs.

Big beefy good sounding non complicated v8 that's been around a while
7 spd
Electronic rear locker
I know first gen ones have held up great to corrosion around here.

 

I have a 2018 midnight it's a great truck with lots of power.

 

I drove one around for a while, few years older, 5.6 v8, lots of power drove well but sucked the fuel, had a fairly small tank so not sure if that was just perceived or....

Power wise, it's in the same area as the fordrsm and yota. But, it does well in the real world against those others. It's at least modern with the transmission and the entire rest of the truck unlike the yota. The 7spd seems to do decent on mpg. From what I've read. If it can get 20 mpg freeway at 70-75 mpg, I'm happy. The 5.6 endurance engine is tried and true, with no MDS tech to break. Yeah the Titan has the lowest payload/ hauling capability, but it's still more than I need 99% of the time.

The interior looks nice, with great seats, and the bed rail system is pretty slick. I hear the truck is not as refined ride wise as others, but it sends pretty rugged and capable.

Believe it or not guys, I should be actually getting a truck in a month or so. I've been working hard on this, doing my truck research while getting my finances in shape. It's ram truck month until end of March. I know that's 2 months but that's Ram's bad calendar skills that I might take advantage of.

I still have to drive a 3.21 geared new ram, and the Titan now. The 3.92 geared ram sux gas. Yeah, at 65mph it will get 19 or so mpg, but doing 70-75 mph that gear ratio will drop down to as low as 15 mpg. . The same hemi equipped truck with the 3.21 gears will get 21-22 mpg freeway at the 75 mph. The etorque might or might not make sense for me, but that went from a $800 option at first over the regular hemi, to now a $1500 option over the $1200 regular hemi. $2700 more for the hemi etorque over the v6? That's a lot of cash for a 1-2 mpg increase and no extra power.

The 5.0 in the Ford is only $2000 at most, as an upcharge depending on the trim level.
The Titan comes standard with the v8.

 

I wouldn't buy a vehicle because it gets a mile or two more the gallon. How long do you plan on having this truck? How many miles will you put on it in that time?

This calc assumes 15,000 miles per year and a gas $2.25 a gal. Save Money

I think you will find you will save a couple hundred bucks a year with one of the more efficient trucks over one of the less efficient trucks. Is a couple hundred bucks a year worth driving a truck you don't like over one you did like?

 

None of them do get that in the real world. One time I got over 20 in a 2013 F-150 supercrew 4x4 with 3.73 on the interstate driving 80mph. It was a freak thing, and I was actually driving to the drag strip and they made the comment that the air was extremely good that day. It was also a still day, not windy. Normally it would get somewhere between 17 or 18 on that trip. If you look at fuelly.com you can see the mileage that these new trucks really get. Even the diesel half tons don't do that great, they are around 23mpg. If you look on an F-150 forum you will see guys claiming they are getting 24-25mpg out of a 2.7 f-150 which is BS.

 

GM knocked one out of the park with the new 2.7.

Well, the 18+ 5.0 F-150, the 3.21 geared 19 ram, and even the newer 5.3 get over 20 mpg at that speed, provided its not too hilly.

These are not only rare one off cases either. If you could get 18 ish from a 6 spd non DI coyote the revised 10 spd plus DI coyote should get it there.

 

If I get the truck I really want, I'll probably keep it for 200k. I don't think I'd be giving up anything if I get what I want. If I get 20+ mpg freeway, I'll be running better than I get now with my Audi. Plus the truck is not giving up anything 0-60 vs my car. That's what have when you put a 400 hp engine in a truck. Mid 5 second 0-60 is shocking for a truck.

 

Even the first gen 6 spd 2.7 f150 was getting mid 20's on the freeway in the real world. I don't doubt the dual injection 10 spd ones can't improve on that.

 

How does a 10 speed improve mpgs on the interstate? All the new trucks have the power to stay in high gear on most hills on the interstate. The 6 speed had a .69 6th gear and the 10 speed has a .63 10th gear.

Here is what people are getting with the 2.7.

 

The 10 spd still has a marginally mpg friendlier ratio. If it kicks down a gear is where the 10 spd will help a lot at freeway speed vs the 6 spd.

That is average mpg.

 

2018 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 4x4 with the 6.2 8speed. This was with two adults, two boxers, how about 500 pounds of cargo. Speed was kept no more than 5 over the limit, with the occasional burst as needed for passing. 2 hours of driving in the rain, and the picture speaks for itself.

The fuel economy meter in my daily driver (2016 Impala) is within 5-8% of actual. It calculates on the high side.

The one in my 2005 Silverado is about the same. I can’t get instant, just average. If it’s just me in the truck on the highway I might average 19. Hook a trailer to it, loaded or unloaded, or use 4 WD and it drops to 14-15. I gave up calculating fuel mileage on that long ago. It’s a truck and it has 183000 on it. I’m just happy it keeps doing what I need it to do and it isn’t falling apart yet.

 

My experiences with the lie o meter is that they are close enough to declare as fact.

 

That's what I've seen between Ford, Audi VW, GM, Honda, Nissan, and Toyota. Close enough at worst.
