Colder here. What's your temp? What ya burnin?

We have 5f here with 2-4 inches of snow for today and another 3-6 tomorrow night, then another shot of snow Thursday. We have a crackling load of birch, poplar, and spruce blazing in the hearth.

I don't know about you saskwoodburner, but we are holding at 20" of ice under what is starting to be a good amount of snow which is now insulating it from further development. In lakes up north there has been a lot of slush building under the snow due to weight pushing the ice down causing water to flood through cracks. This becomes a trap for getting your pickup or snowmobile mired.

 

Don't you know it, one time we had 7 sleds mired in a foot of water under a couple of feet of snow on the ice. It took forever to get them all out, and we all got soaked.

 

Yes, soaked in water from the knees down, and soaked in sweat from the knees up. The worst scenario I used to get into was with a snowmobile pulling a sled, alone, deep slush, and brutal cold outside. Plus it usually occurs miles from any shelter or warmth. Been there plenty of times, but now at age 54 I try to avoid any chance of this scenario occurring, and stay on the beaten/frozen path.

 

That's what happens with age, wisdom. After we've gone through it too many times. The worst part, after one person pulls on the skis while another pushes the sled and you get them all out one by one. The is no one left there to get (me) the last guy out.

 

It is fun to just be able to think back and laugh about it all now!

 

I don't know if I'm ready to laugh just yet. I still remember boots full of ice water.

 

14 here, 76 inside, just threw some pine on the coals. Less wind today woo hoo! Watching another storm for Tuesday into Wednesday that they’re saying will be 10-14” of all fluffy snow for us, but I’ll believe it when I see it. The coastal mix has been reaching inland a lot more than usual this year.

 

We can only pray for light fluffy, then life is good. Sort of....

Cherry for me right now. You'll be pleased to know when I just got into another stack from a few years back, I was surprised to find quite a bit of Elm.

 

Ice is BAD except in

 

Its warmed up a bit to -26c/-13f under clear skies. Burning fir and pine today! Im hoping to fire up the bradley smoker today but it doesnt like these temps. Oh well the meat is already thawed so will give it a go. saskwoodburner is that furnace working ok? You mentioned you were having concerns with it. Stay warm over there.

 

I don't actually know that many people who fish (everyone and their dog hunts though!), and these are the people that you would normally here about ice depth. I'm guessing plenty thick as Sask is always cold, but I'll also bet thinner than other years due to all the snow which is unusual for the cold weather. I'll ask my one niece, she's a social butterfly and will probably have some numbers.

 

Still chilly up here in Sask. Had a super recharge sleep so while the weather sucks, today is a good day!

 

I keep telling her that the more we burn, the more I get to cut! Maybe I'll get to use that new 362 now!

 

NH mountain man was just asking about the ice here. The best answer I have so far now, is trucks can drive on it.

 

Furnace is still being a bear but we manage. No one will freeze to death under this roof, but my sleep is severely lacking.
