Wow, beautiful area there. I’ve been meaning to ask a friend of mine who flies a drone with a camera if he’ll come do a flyover of our property. I use Google Earth Pro to do a lot of planning but that can be so limited in its imagery. Adding drone footage and pictures definitely gives and interesting perspective. Very cool.
What drone? My brother has loaned me his DJI Mavic. Pretty easy to fly but I'm learning the ropes on the camera side of these things. I think I need to scale back on the video quality, it fills the card quick and takes forever to upload or download...whatever it's called.
I've been wanting a good drone but still holding off. Maybe this will be the year I'll get one and one with a good camera.
Agree, I bought one a few years ago. I never learned to fly it, but my 10 yr old grandson can do it. From what I have seen, good drones are getting smaller and have better picture quality. I have a good friend who flys remote control planes and drones. He would be one I would ask as he stays current on what is going on with them. I am interested in the photography. My friends says he has lost a few that "got away from him" I think there are drones now which have a program in them to have them return to the spot they left from. Many more features than just a few years ago.
Yes, Well Seasoned son had a good one last summer at the gtg. I talked to him some about it but still have not gotten one.
When it was wooded, the power company would cut the trees under the power line. I would climb up and cut the downed trees in sections. It was steep enough the sections would slide a good distance down the hill and I could get them to the bottom to cut into firewood. I was a lot younger and in better shape back then. I have a DJI Phantom 4. It was used when I bought it. Spendy but only about 1/2 price of a new one. The Mavic is smaller and a lot easier to pack around. I think it may have longer flight time on the battery as well. Better camera also. I went with the Phantom because the used ones are a little less money. Shooting video in 4K eats up storage in a hurry. I opted to start with shooting in a lesser mode so I can download directly to my phone or iPad. A lot of sites have limits on how much data they will allow you to download so you can do a longer video with less quality. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
This one has a one button push to return to home and will also return when it loses signal from the controller or the battery level gets low. Just have to set the height you want it to return at high enough to avoid the surrounding trees. It lands almost exactly where it took off from. It has several options to set a course and it will then pilot itself leaving you able to concentrate on running the camera. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
I just found a used DJI Mini 2 drone on Facebook Marketplace and picked it up last night. I’ve never flown a drone. This thing is so easy to fly it’s amazing, and it has a 4K camera and gimbal system that makes for some nice video. I don’t even have a micro SD card in the drone yet, so this is the low grade video captured from my iPhone, which the controller uses for a bird’s eye view from the drone. I’m really impressed with this relatively affordable mini drone.
I'm 75% sure my kids are getting me a DJI Mini 2 for Christmas. I've been flying my brother's Mavic Pro for a few years now and it's fun, but the Mini 2 appeals to me because it's so portable. I'm primarily using it for making YouTube videos and have a buddy with his Part 107 who will fly it until I get my 107 license. I know it doesn't have the "follow me" feature or collision avoidance, but I rarely use those features and I have access to my brother's if I need it for now. I have a few questions. I'm curious as to the mode where you in while filming? If you've switched between the Cinematic/normal/ sport mode how much difference is there? What is real world battery life? Thanks!
Fortunately the Mini 2 is under 250g, so no federal drone license is required. That’s one of the reasons I went with it. Honestly this was my first time flying a drone, and I had forgotten how to switch between the three modes available. I kept looking through the options on the app trying to switch, then last night glanced at the controller and realized how dumb I was being as the literal switch for flight mode is on the controller. So I have only flown it on cinematic so far. Real world battery life was in the upper 20s minute wise, but I didn’t pay close enough attention to say for certain.
The 249g max means you don't have to register the drone and put the equivalent of an N number on it. The part 107 license (remote operator license) is required if you earn any kind of compensation. They consider YouTube a commercial enterprise and have been tagging videos and creators for that violation.
I would assume so, but there are dronies saying any commercial use and the fact YT can sell ads on your channel prior to you hitting the 4k hrs of watch time and 1k subs, makes it commercial. That said, I've only heard of channels that are monetized getting hit. It usually just a "hey you can't do that" type of letter, door knock or email.
