I picked this splitter up last fall for 300 Bucks, i had been looking at splitters and figured it would make a good winter project and give me a good place to start. It has a good 9hp robin motor, a 13 gpm pump and a nice sized ram. After getting it home and using it for about an hour i new i would need to address is the height of the beam. IMG_20131004_163030_850 (1).jpg

For about a month i used it to split 3-4 cords of wood by rolling it up on to a set of car ramps, it worked but, made it hard to move and i had to remove all the split wood so i could pull it of the ramps. It had a big leak on the front seal of the ram that i new i would have to deal with so i moved it into the garage for the winter and to make a few minor changes( atleat thats what i had planned)
After looking at ideas and thinking what was the best way to raise the beam i decided to put a new axle under it

Then i got to thinking about how i hated to have to move all the split wood to move the splitter around and that it had so much tongue weight. So i switched things around IMG_20131117_150829_777.jpg
At this point i thought ok ready for paint, but after a few beers and sitting in the garage over the winter i added a few more things , cup holder on the back of the push block, table for staging logs, rack for splits, rails for beam, vice for sharping chains, and a starter/ generator from a golf cart

I Used the splitter for another few cords of wood and wanted to add a few more thing, i wanted a way to shorten the stroke of the ram , most of my wood is 18" and the ram is about has about a 24" stroke. I added adjustable rod to kick the ram back

Every thing worked great but i had a large alder tree go down over the winter with rounds pushing 36" at the base, i could have just noodle them up and made them into manageable pieces but what fun it that so i new a log lift was in the future. The splitter already was balanced well and i did not want to make the back end to heavy to a log lift was not a good option so i went with a crane/jib lift IMG_20140427_200109708_HDR.jpg

I lost most of the build pics of the crane when i lost my phone but have a few with it complete, i had the crane laying around from an old hitch crane and the winch is a harbor freight/w a wireless remote , i am to cheep to buy lifting tongs so i made my own and they work great. I have to remember to put the drop down lag down when lifting large rounds or it will tip its self IMG_20140329_185222208.jpg i

I will get some more pic this weekend when i finish up the large rounds

Really nice work CFF. It's almost as much fun building the gear as it is using it when it does what we want…. very cool…

That's the thing… when you do it yourself… you always do a better job than you might think cause you pick up tricks along the way… and, of course, there's always the cold beer… ;)

That was an incredible series of transformations pics of what looked like your basic horizontal home made job to this incredible multifunction rig. My fav pic of all of them was the tractor rear end in the air, funny. Nice work!
