X2. Getting a distinct pine vibe from what's visible of the bark through all the moss. End grain does look a little like elm but the cross grain doesn't look right for elm. My guess is it'll burn better than snowballs though
Welcome to the forum Captain! Good to see another Michigander on the forum. Really can't tell much by the pictures so will bow out of this one.
This one sure is confusing. Looking at the splits I want to say its a conifer of some sort. That bark pic is tough with all the moss on it. How about a pic of the tree itself?
Hey, CaptainNemo can you have your friend snap a picture of the tree from which this firewood fell? That would likely help immensely. Also, having something in the picture that could serve as a size reference to determine growth ring size would also help... until then, it’s a mystery!!!
Thanks for all the input people. This stuff is extremely difficult to split so I'm thinking its elm. I'd take a picture of the guys tree to verify more but with this storm we're experiencing in western michigan I'm not going out much the rest of this week.
Could be slippery/red elm..............splits easily with a Fiskars and is not stringy like the other elms...............is that hand split??? Bark is wrong for BL and OSAGE.
