A windstorm this winter claimed one of our pignut hickorys. Blew the top right out of it. It wasnt a very big tree but turned out to be enough lumber to make stairs for my cabin. These stairs will go from the main level to the loft. I really liked the color and grain of it. The wood was still frozen, and the sawdust would re-freeze on the boards, kinda weird to see. It was sunny and 65F here today, so no way i couldnt get out and cut some wood! Top 1" of the ground thawed and turned into a muddy mess tho. Milled it on the trusty LT15. Also added in a picture of some sassafras i cut and stuck on a skid a while ago. Love the smell of that stuff.
Lol yeah she was busy on the hillside across the creek alot today. Probably chasing chipmunks would be my guess.
Beautiful boards there, Hickory is my favorite for any kind of wood project. It definitely would slow me down on the stairs, admiring each step as I go.
We have used all kinds of wood in our cabin project. Sycamore, yellow and white poplar, red oak, a bit of sassafras, but this was our first hickory to saw up so i was pretty excited to see what it would look like.
Welcome to the club Sycamore03 , we're at the far northern edge of that tree's range here. I never seen any north of the Mass. border. Anyways, enjoy yourself here, and post some pics.
