A few weeks ago I was having trouble with smoke getting into the house when reloading. I figured the chimney cap may be plugged. We had snow on the roof and the roof is metal shingles and it was too slippery to get up on the roof. Yesterday, Sunday, I noticed most of the snow was off the roof so I went up to clean the cap. Didn't quite get to the chimney but I did slide off the roof and landed on the ground about 8-10 feet down. Cut my head a bit but my wife got that cleaned up. She thought it might be a good idea to see a Dr. so off to urgent care we went. I had a cat scan and an EKG. No major damage done but I have to take it easy for awhile. Burning oil until I can get the chimney thing taken care of. That was not the ideal way to end a weekend. I may have a sore and stiff neck for a few days but I am living.
Glad to hear you made it relatively unscathed. Any landing you walk away from is a good landing. I was fortunate to have a much younger, healthier friend come over saturday morning and sweep mine. My days of laddering up onto the roof, especially in winter, are OVER. I take too long to heal....................
Don't like this at all, but glad you are ok. Just a thought, if you have the screw together rods for the chimney brush you may be able to reach up there from the ladder and tap that screen a bit.
So if I have already done this in my youth.. Frost on metal roofs is slick.. Yup learned me that one the hard way.
I don't want anyone on the roof while it is slick. Me falling is bad enough, I don't need someone else to take a dive.
That’s the problem! I fell off a ladder in front of my wife a few years back and broke my elbow. Now she freaks out whenever I’m on a ladder.
I'm glad it wasn't worse! You must have strong bones. I have a metal roof, too, standing seam. Last summer the sweep I hired came when it had rained, and the roof was wet. I offered to reschedule but he went up anyway, said he had special soles that were slip resistant. So I wouldn't feel overly concerned about hiring a sweep to go up there, they are used to it.
