I'm not sure why I had never come across this before last week. Lumber markers / crayons / pencils, yes. But, a holder for crayons that allows for a lanyard was new to me. 20190201_232115.jpg

So of course I had to add to the firewood arsenal. :emb:

    Couple that with a tape

and these 9' length logs will measure out much quicker.

Eventually it will look like an Army National Guard unit deploying to the woods, just to get all my wood tools for the day to the forest. :D

    Happy hoarding friends!

I think i've got a couple of those holders that are probably close to 40 yrs old, my dad used to grade lumber at one of the local mills, he worked there for 40 yrs.

I just started using the crayons last fall. They work great, but I didn’t buy the holder. I figured I would lose it or break it. However, when I started teaching about 17 years ago, the math teacher next door gave me all his chalk holders because he had gotten a white board. Those were awesome because it kept your fingers from getting chalk dust all over them. They pretty much work the same exact way the crayon holders do.

Well my friend, we have much in common. Same tractor, same crayon, same crayon holder... I've used these for many moons and think I may have given a few away at one of our GTG parties.

But when it comes to measuring, I go cheap. A simple 4' stick that is marked every 16". When I want an 8' log, it is easy to mark. You can see one laying on the log. If it breaks or I lose it or whatever, it is pretty simple to make another.

I started using my little one's sidewalk chalk and holder this year. Came in the huge box of chalk that she enjoys using on the concrete patio. Pretty handy tool now that I'm burning in an indoor stove with size restrictions. :) For years I just used a sharpie mark that I put on the Stihl to cut to 24" for the owb. If I goofed and made it too long for the splitter, I just didn't split it! Or split by hand. Not an option with this nice new IS I'm feeding.

Wife makes fun of me for marking logs. so sometimes I leave her with some that have to go in diagonally to fit in the stove, and she curses me out via text. That's how we roll. :D

I totally understand feeling like a national guard unit deploying, I've got so many gadgets nowadays and I always think "maybe I'll need that one, and that one, and that one too" when loading up to head out. I almost spend as much time dinkin around with my gadgets as I do actually working

Have one I use at the sawmill...although mine does not have the lanyard. I measure the pack to determine total board feet and place a tag on it for accounting and as shipping receipt. Mine seems to be double ended as it has the threads on both ends, although someone must have lost the other tightening ring.

I use sidewalk chalk as well. Pink, as I have found that it stands out the most out of the colors I've had available. Never thought of the holder, and honestly, not sure if it's worth the hassle like it is with those grease crayons.
