  Ray. You might as well live on my side of the border. Terry's entire neighborhood, and half of his country, drives across the bridge to my side and go grocery shopping, pick up stuff they buy on the internet cheaper in the U.S., and buy there gas here anyway.  :p What? Love Loon. Love man!

Okay. I've decided I am going to pull the plug here sometime in the next few weeks. And you guys have some nice splitters. So what do you think?
(Not that any of you would know what your talking about when it comes to splitters, chainsaws, mauls, axes, wood, or ......... )

Now. Where is that duck and cover smiley at? upload_2014-4-28_21-4-37.jpeg

No thank you. I do not feel like having to split all the real big ones so I can lift the pieces up on the splitter. What do you do with the real large ones Mike? Bust them up first.?

LOL. Yes. I use to borrow a neighbors splitter. And I still could. But don't want to anymore. Years ago I started renting a machine that was only 2.5 miles from the house and at $60 a day it wasn't worth buying one. But the rental place closed. :( So, it's time to buy one. I've only been talking about it for five years now.  Guess it's time to buy one. LOL

I had a horizontal/vertical splitter... And am in the process of converting it to horizontal only with a log lift.

The h/v splitters are a design compromise. In order for it to work vertically the hinge point has to be in such a spot that the axle and tires are right in your way when it's in horizontal mode. And then most manufacturers put the engine attached to the hydraulic tank/axle which means it's at risk of damage from falling logs if you are not careful.

Vertical mode never worked for me. On uneven ground it's a pia to get large rounds in place. And I'm tall so I don't like working bent over. I found myself lifting larger rounds then I should because I didn't want to use it vertically.

Hehehe… I can relate Mike. That bending' over thing gets impossible for me, after a while, when I try to bend back up holding even 20 lbs extra. My 17 lb saw is more than enough. I think vert vs horiz splitters are a preference thing really. What ever works the easiest to get the job done is my choice. A log lift for the horiz units makes a lot of sense for sure. I like vertical units and my Troybilt is a better design in vert mode. As you've said, most are good one way or the other, but not both.

I am a fan of a dedicated horizontal with log lift & out feed tables.

If you are doing mostly straight grained wood < 18" diameter a Super splitter works great! (Yes I know you can worry larger & gnarly pieces by hitting them several times with a SS but that is NOT where it shines.)

Yup. Everyone's preference is different I guess. It may also be just what we are use to doing. I have used an Iron and Oak V/H, and a home made job that was only vertical. I prefer splitting in the vertical position. I just roll or spin the round into place and pull the lever. I then can use this time, if I want to position next round. Depending how fast the splitter cycle is. I will be splitting Ash and Pine 95% of the time. Both species are easy splitting wood. I am pretty quick when I am working and I don't want to be lifting every piece of wood in the round size. The log lifts add cost to the splitter and seem like they would slow me down. Lots of things to consider in several areas. Higher power on some splitters also mean stronger hoses/fittings.
