I was unsure if I was going to do this today, we have a little snow on the ground and its melting rapidly... Melting means more mud... this is swampy low lands and when your tractor gets stuck, its stuck... Anyways, I went to get the wood I dropped on the farm, last sunday. I had to cut a trail thru the hedge row, as Im not driving tractor through those vine, saplings, briars. Ive been in the woods before and knocked a hose loose and its immediate down time and a “beech” to get tools and fluids back in there.... so the stihl FS90R with brush blade is more than up to the task!!
I could then drive back and grab the wood without tearing up the machine. I left the trailer in the field and would just go back and forth dumping it. The first two trees were easy to get too. I happened to look down as I was coming out and saw a cottontail resting against a tree. The tree V’d just above the base, so I snuck behind and actually got to touch it before it took off. We are running dogs next week, so it better get some energy, as we plan on testing it!!
After the first two oaks, it was time for the third one I didnt buck up last week. It was much larger and the tree would bind my chain due to the size of it and the way it landed. I needed to again use the FS90R to cut a trail for the tractor... well it doesnt play so it only took a minute. By the way, its way more dangerous than a chain saw... and I love it hahahaha... I used the bucket to raise the log a bit in different sections and buck it. I only ever got an inch or two, it was just super heavy and my tractor would lift off the ground which is kinda fun lol.. I got about 1/2 of it processed, I just ran out of room.
I dont know how much it all weighed, but I have 2500lb axles on this trailer and it was about grounded out. The tractor has a 3 range hst tranny... I had to use L in the field in 4wd or it wouldnt move it. Its 1.2miles from my farm gate to the driveway. It didnt like H range so M was the ticket. I’ll go back tomorrow to finish the last oak, and there some beech in a different section of the farm from last year I intend to grab, then my farm adventures in firewood are over. I have a few more trips to her grandpas and a ton of splitting and stacking to do. I’d say I have 4 or so cords worth already, 2 left at her gpops, and another 3/4 or so tomorrow.
Ejp1234 How do you like that tri-blade for your FS90? I have one of the circular blades for my FS110. If you have used both, which one did you find to work best at cutting brush?
For briars and teeny saplings, the tri... for shrubs the 4 sided one.. and the circular saw blade for the 1” and up.
For briars and small saplings I use the head with 3 nylon blades. I do like the Stihl brushcutters and they work great for grass trimming.
Its the only “weed whacker” ive ever regularly put eye protection on for lol.. The first time I started it, it sounded like a little harley... thats how I knew I bought a real weed whacker hahahahaga
Just got the 90 or 90R (mighta been the 91?) last year, and need something for saplings. Sounds like I need the "big" blade.
I put my Stihl helmet on, it has both hearing protection and the mesh face guard. I wouldn't use my fs110 with out it.

See if you can find a "beaver blade" It's a circular blade with chainsaw teeth riveted on. I have cut some up to 3" with it on my old 110, we have the 130 Combi unit now, need to try it out. Has a ton of torque.
Looks like we think along the same lines, I finally found this old picture from 2011 when we first started hoarding firewood. Storm broke the top out of this tree about 2 miles from our house, the lady gave it to us, but we had to drive thru rows of planted pines about 6' tall. Used tractor to pull trailer like you did. We cut the trunk down too. We have a 30hp 3130 GST Kubota. It didn't like 12th gear on the highway either. We have some truck scales on the way to our house, so I stopped by and checked it. Had 8 blocks loaded and they averaged 955#. That's a 16' 7000K trailer. Just shows what a little planning and determination can accomplish. Oh yeah, back then, I was using a MS029 Super with 25 " bar. The last picture is the base of that tree, I'm 6' tall. Keep up the good work, great ideas and safe hoarding.
Ejp1234 I'm wondering why you don't insert the pictures into the post? It would certainly make it better for those viewing it. As for the wood and cutting, very nice! I do hope the mud holds off for you...and for me too.
Got a combi 130. Run 10 inch cross cut chop saw blade.. 3 inch sugar maples fall.. Blade whistles hit tree makes a ting...

I disagree, some of our users are in areas that don't have high-speed internet so thumbnail seems to work the best. Reader can always make picture bigger
