Pension, Disability and Social Security "possibly" one of those in jeopardy

    Hello all, Some of us either down the road or now have "all" of the three above in the title.

    I was at my local base yesterday speaking with a VA rep and a financial benefits person and I got hit broadside "HARD" with a statement that came out! Now, "PLEASE" don't go to GQ and start calling Congressmen and Senators, "Yet"! till "I" get my facts and ducks in a row. Here's what I heard. One of the people I speak with attends the financial conferences for the VA in Washington, D.C. and a certain woman Senator from California is proposing a bill "and as I heard it is written" states as such; If a member of the armed forces, who is getting a pension, VA disability compensation, and SSI is and shall loose some portion or all of their SSI depending on the amout of time served, years paid in and such, of course one of the old bag Senators jumped right on the wagon as well. "AGAIN PLEASE NOTE" this is second hand information but it is credible. He also said People like me who has a Pension and disability may completely loose there SSI when eligible! That is just FVCKED UP!!! :headbang: I paid into SSI for over 40 years. "AGAIN" this is not law yet but it's funny how quiet it seems to be. I'm going to really dig on this one folks! I can't see them taking our pensions but who knows about the rest. I don't trust any of those B@$T@RDS! This is a way where a certain political party can cut funding to the military or DHS "as they have in the past" and re-distribute the monies. Because it was also said "as retirees", were secure and why should we be getting 3 checks from Uncle Sam! :mad: If any of you hear anything about this, PLEASE post. Our Vets here need to be informed. I will continue my trek on this, I'm not ready to break out the boxing gloves just yet and I pray a fight is not in the wind because this could get "very ugly"!

    Right! but notice I didn't say wealth TD, It appears they are going to take "whats coming" to us. 99% of us paid into our SSI for years, Thats what I'm feeling will be on the Chopping block for us!

    This is old, but I guess it's now rearing it's ugly head again on the other side of the isle... I'm still digging. *EDIT* this column is what "was" happening and since had been addressed. what is new is what I stated above.

    Amazing isn't it! It isn't like they went in and held up a bank, The US Government gave it to them! How do you put a price on being F-c_ED up for the rest of your life. I live with pain nearly everyday in my back, shoulder and knees! I'd turn in every dollar I get for a month just to have a good tennis ball throwing session with my boarder collie!:( I have a sling shot looking thing that chucks the ball for me. :)

    I'm surprised that they allow "triple dipping" now. I work for our local city and in Ohio that mean you pay into the OPERS system instead of SS. It has been seeming forever now that getting a OPERS pension meant that you take about a 60% cut on your SS (if you paid into SS at all, like I and many others did for years) But I've heard some rumblings here lately that the SS penalty might have, or be changing...

    Yes, but you will find a lot of government employees who have the opt out on SS, will work part time, and post retirement to accumulate enough quarters to draw SS- especially if they had some quarters with prior employment, before getting the government job. so they triple dip. I have a guy who is working for me, who is drawing State Police pension, US military pension as a retired Colonel, Social Security, and may have enough on standard State employee pension to draw a little from it.

    I looked at working part time back when I started for the city 12 years ago...But I needed 10 more years worth of credits in SS, and it was gonna take a pretty healthy part time job to make enough to qualify, plus I figured by the time I got there the rules would change, or SS would be belly up anyways, so I said screw it...

    All im going to say is if you have earned it then you should have it. Double triple or quad dipping is ok if you have earned it.

    Yes, Most who have become double or triple dippers worked for every dime of it, choosing to continue working the next career. Most of the time the pension is not enough to live on alone. Retired military guys who work at different jobs tell me it simply isn’t enough to be “retired”. You retire in early forties, that pension isn’t going to get you by.

    Why feel guilty or be penalized that some decent coin is finally coming in from different career rewards?

    Correct, 100% !!! I even took out a deferred fund account for just that reason and had some Mutual funds.

    I guess I could see them changing the rules going forward for NEW people so you know what you are signing up for up front. But to modify a "agreement " already in place that people have budgeted and planned their retirement on is just plain wrong.

    Persons in congress have no problem triple or more dipping ( seems to be SOP) but sure squawk when one of us minions follow their lead.

    Hope our Veterans are taken care of and no benefits are lost/reduced. The VA has failed me at every turn.
