-2 and the outdoor boiler is consuming mass quantities of wood the past 24 hours to keep up with the heat demand. I have about four cord set aside for next year, that I plan not to get into. I see that if we have a consistently very cold winter, I will need much more wood than I planned on putting into stacks.

image.jpg image.jpg Still stuck in a cold funk, but much warmer than it was. And some kind of wind/snow system on the way in a day or two, and more cold. Poplar and heating oil.

And what about atv's? Are they atv, quad, or bike? Depends upon who you are talking to I guess.

I got that message too , If I was running 100% gas heat , With these temperatures I would not be turning My thermostat down , There would be a real chance I would end up with frozen pipes

The colder it gets the harder it is on things. Count your blessing it happened at home. You should see what happens to the plastic on cars at -30* and colder, it will shatter like glass. When metal get -50* or colder it will crack with a sharp rap, say like a pothole. Cold is hard on everything and it takes a gentle touch in harsh conditions. Be careful out there.

Reminds me of when we lived further north in snow country. People would come up for a visit and could not believe how fast people drove in the winter. But, the road, although snow packed were not slippery until spring. Get the temperature up around 30 or so and for sure it gets slippery.

One exception though. Like yesterday when I made a trip into the city, the streets were slippery although the temperature was below zero. That is because of the amount of traffic which keeps the roadways a bit warmer. Yes, friction does cause heat!

The other thing that makes glare ice is people locking their breaks coming to a stop and spinning their tires when the take off. Be especially careful at an traffic stop. It can easily be seen in the dark with on coming traffics lights.

Amen to that one! People are creatures of habit. That is why it scares me to see people get into the habits of driving fast up to a corner then slamming on the brakes. Same for taking off; they want to fee that power. Come winter it is no wonder people park their cars in ditches and medians, etc.

Tuesday the 29th, and yesterday the 30th lows overnight were -28 actual temp, don't know wind chill, but had wicked NW wind....I know, because I was up 2 to 3 times..(nature breaks)....and putting wood in the furnace (poplar, pine and some oak), fired up the Dutchwest as well those 2 nights....(poplar and ash). 77 IST...life is good! Better now at -3 and warming for a few days.

Ive got nothing to complain about here. We are a balmy -6c/21f. I went to bed early last night and didnt bother with reloading the stove as I was to tired. I will get er going when I get home from work a bit later. The cold air will be moving into the Rockies sometime over the weekend.
