I too dislike a member calling names at other members on here. If you feel you have to do that, do it in a PM.

As for farmers burning brush piles (and I do some) if you talk to farmers in this area you'll find all or most of them (all that I've talked to) have the same gripe. People come on their place and actually leave more of a mess than it would have been if they had not come; even though no charge was made; it was free wood. Fences damaged. Gates damaged and sometimes left open, etc., etc.

I've let some folks come onto our land to cut wood and I have never charged a cent. But it seemed that it rarely was appreciated. One that really bugged me though was 2 fellows who cut a lot of wood here. They did say they planned on cutting some and leaving for me as a thank you. So, one day I went in back and saw a bunch of logs they skidded out and thought they must have left them for me. So I bucked them up and planned on splitting it. The next day they came in and took all the wood I had bucked up! They didn't even thank me. Then they had the balls to ask if they could cut again the following winter. I'm sure most of you can imagine the answer they got.

Backwoods Savage is right, as usual, IME, farmers are usually very busy. Got some very large sugar Maples that were on the edge of the farmer's land. Because I have a tractor I took the time to brush hog back the brush that grew up around his field to make a trail.. I then dragged the logs over the part that had been brush hog.
To be nice I ran the brush hog around the entire edge of the field, and made sure that nothing bigger than my thumb was in the hay field. Nothing will make a farmer:mad:.. then ruining our quarter million-dollar Bailer are the only three dry days he has available..

That weekend got me a phone call every time a tree falls on 800 acre farm. And he burns Wood!

Don’t get me started on the words “wasteful” and “State of CT”. I’ve got a long list of things I see every day at work.

I’ll have to agree on the kinetic splitter. It doesn’t like crotches. I peel off what I can, but the remainder goes into the fire pit pile or in rare cases, the dump. But I still have plenty of uglies in the stacks!

Yep, just like that. Treat people & they're property well & never have an issue or a wood shortage. I work with numerous landowners & communication & common sense is the key.

LOL I spent a year working in a Ct state office building. I could get you going LOL
Was an excellent wake up call after working 20 years self employed in construction.
Had always assumed when people went to work they went to work. Had no idea there was a whole segment of society that spent eight hours a day playing Solitaire on top of the line computers.

Just remember folks. Next time your listening to elevator music your most likely really waiting for someone to finish whatever today’s game of choice is.
I won’t mention the waste though. No sense getting sawwoody worked up.

For sure there have always been tons of wood going to waste in MI. Wherever you find woods, you'll see downed trees, dead standing trees and wind damaged, not to mention dutch elm problems. Now with the EAB, Oak wilt and whatever hit the beech, there is so much wood going to waste that it is a crime.

When I was working 60-70 hours a week I only had X amount of time to gather up some firewood.
Some of that firewood time was spent on blowdowns in the yard from storms . I was splitting by hand. The pieces that wouldn't split got pushed to the side for "when I had some more time" which of course never came, so they rotted where they stood. I have 9 huge oak crotches my hydraulic splitter stalled on. Waiting for me to noodle them in half and maybe try them on the splitter again. Every time I walk or drive by them with the saw I'm on my way to cut up 10 times as much wood in the time I will spend futzing with those crotches. I'm pretty much retired and they've been there for three years. So yeah, sometimes it's easier to just cut your losses on tough pieces and move on with your life. It's too short. I've got 7 years left if I have my father's genes. I'm taking the easy road. As long as it's a high road.

Yes, but did your father make firewood or do other physical activity? I'm convinced it's all about keeping the weight off, and hard physical labor.

Pallet Pete if you have a new side by side, New pick up, new zero turn mower, wood spliter and a herd of new tractors along with the time and money to manicure several acres of grass then Yes I counsider you as Rich.
Yes I did say the out doors with the Morgon's on you tube.

Again I didn't name any members names so if they feel guilty of being fire wood snobs then so be it. That is on whom ever they are.

I usually clear and grub several miles of fencelines every year. Sometimes I'll take my gooseneck and grab a load of nice straight ash if there is any, but I feel kind of uncomfortable doing it. The owner is paying $300-$400/hr and they want to see machines ripping and throwing trees. If I do cut and load, I'll do it after fueling and servicing, usually dark by then. Most guys don't care, but some are kind of weird about stuff like that. And its a lot easier to burn greens trees and brush. If you pile it up and let it dry, a year later when you try to burn it just goes poof, all the twigs and branches are gone before you get a good bed of coals established and you're left with a pile of charred logs and rootballs.

My observations......myself not getting my piles picked up and some splits started to rot.....big one I see is the biomass plants. In theory it’s cleaner than coal, but some plants consume tons and tons per day. Some nice forest land is clear cut in northern ny and whole tree chippers run all day.

He was having arthritis problems so the last couple of years, not so much. Also was taking Vioxx. But his Dad had a disabling stroke at almost the same age. Pretty much why I went on a crash health diet, lost the desk job, started running. Both my (younger) brothers have the arthritis problems and so far, knock on wood, I haven't. Yet. Although I had to give up running due to knee pain .

Well, keep doing what you're doing, sounds like it's working. I gave up running years ago, got bursitis in my knee.

My Father took Vioxx and "It killed him" Three years after he started taking it! I can't prove it but he had arthritis in his hips and had days he could barely move. He seemed fine on just plain Motrin and such but when he was prescribed Vioxx, things went South for him!
Molly, My Daughter who was athletic all her school years, college, LaCrosse and soccer, just got diagnosed and the ortho doctors told her to "Never" Jog again or her knees will be damaged for the rest of her life! She's 26 and her MRI indicated acute bursitis in her right knee. She loved running, I told her 2 years ago to quit jogging because our family is plagued with joint issues. She's figuring it out now!

Tough when your wings get clipped when you are still in your twenties! My son is 33, has gout, and has a extra bone in both ankles ( Os Trigonum Syndrome) that flares up every now and then, and takes Prednisone to get over. Coupled with a desk job. I hope that he can get out from under his time sucking lifestyle to swim or bike. He does make it to the gym once a week.
