Saved a baby squirrel = my wife thinks I'm a hero!

Yesterday my wife called me outside and said there was a baby squirrel that was hurt and wanted to see if I could help. I came out and saw this little guy sprawled out on the neighbors driveway directly under it's nest, some 20' up in the branches in our big Maple. Luckily it was just stunned but the mother was no where to be found.

After a little bit he started to move and eventually followed me around the yard. When I went to pick him up he ran right up my wife's leg like it was a tree.






I snapped a few pictures then went to grab it, but it scampered away under out closed off front porch. We figured the mother would eventually come get it, but we were worried it wouldn't be found before the local cat found it. After about a half hour the mother still didn't show up but the cat did.

Eventually I saw the little guy hiding in the far reaches of the porch, just as a cat showed up to help me find it. Pulling the porch lattice off I crawled under the porch to take the screeching stubborn little guy out of there.

We grabbed a ladder and put him back up in the tree as far as I could, under the now watchful eye of the mother. Once we left it, she ran down the tree, no doubt scolded him and took him back up the tree.

It was really fun to see the two united again which I figured was a great reward for the effort. However, since my wife is an animal loving, tender hearted, well meaning vegetarian to the core, my reward came later that night.....if you know what I mean, ahem.

Now the question is..... where can I find another baby squirrel to save?!

 

Keep reminding her of this one for a while. Maybe write a poem about it.

 

Good idea...or perhaps a song?

 

Can't breathe… … I'm… thinkin'… my wife's response would be more like… … and then launch that little fella about 80 yards into the woods off a soccer goal kick… still can't breathe

OK… I know I prolly just ruined any chance of winning the "Social Justice for Squirrels" award this year…

 

If he doesn't make it under a cars tire or in the soffit of someones house next winter, he's a member of the rodent family.
