46 degrees now and going below zero so I burned down the stove, emptied the ashes, brushed the chimney and stacked wood inside. Looks like we'll have below normal thru Thursday...

This is crazy. I just looked at the forecast. Wednesday is probably going to set new records all over the place, yet, Sunday is now predicted to be 42 degrees for us!!!!!! Talk about bouncing back and forth! Although, I like 42 vs below zero.

I arrived home after sunset to find my tarps had been blown off the woodshed. Trying to attach them in high wind was futile, so I am settling with just covering th wood until a better time.

Looking forward to the boiler keeping us warm cheap.

My brother had an obsolete part go out on his gas furnace. Found it on eBay but had no account. I communicated with the seller in Georgia. He sent it 3day shipping at no extra charge. Brother is up and running just in time for the cold snap.

C81949FD-9D83-489B-BCE7-B122E4EBA635.jpeg I dug out some Locust rounds I’ve had in one of my stacks for 5-6 yrs. It was a branch that was down a couple yrs before I cut it up.

Don’t worry. The record cold temps are just global warming. Nothing to see here.

I brushed the chimney about 5 weeks ago. Had rain early then light flurries and just strong wind now and 19 degrees.

For some reason creosote accumulates at the cap but not much in the pipe. Same setup and burning same wood doesn't do it in the shop.

That's pretty typical. If I ever have any creosote, it's at the cap, and that's it.

So is it safe to say if your cap is clean then the pipe should be clean? I have a mesh cap on mine. It is not plugged up anywhere. I am gonna go up and take a look just to check things out tomorrow afternoon before the cold sets in. I have been telling myself the cap is clean so in theory the pipe should be too. Is this correct?

Yeah, that's usually the way it works. The colder air allows the creosote to condense/ accumulate at the cap.

I’ve got several days of splits and rounds brought down to the boiler so all the wife has to do is throw it in. I caught a flight to KY last night and tonight I fly into Chicago....perfect timing, right? Current forecast is showing 10-below when I land, and the high of Wednesday will be 14 below. The low is going to be -26, wind chill of -50. Wish the hotels had wood stoves and outdoor boilers!

That's kinda what I figured. I'm still gonna try to climb up today and take a look just because I can.
