    I'd be leary of using that splitter, knowing that it could break at any point, then feeling responsible to set things right.

    Before I had my own, I borrowed a friends splitter for a large pile I had. No where near my first experience with hydro's. Use it and returned it. Later I hear the comment he thinks it developed rod knock, probably because I didn't run it at full throttle. I assured him it had no such noise when I used it. He never pressed any further. I did feel bad, I knew him for a long time and felt he wouldn't make this up but I knew I did that splitter no wrong. We're still friends so that's a good thing. I sold him 2 cords last year and threw an extra truck bed load in for good measure(it was elm, so worthless to me, lol).

    I've heard rumors this happens due to not enough oil splashing at lower RPM's.:confused:
    is there any truth to that?

    Yes ! Along with other problems like a reduction in cooling and increased bearing loads (lugging).

    I don't borrow and rarely lend stuff out. Anything that happens while you are using it will guilt you into feeling responsible......even on a clapped out poorly maintained piece of equipment.

    I wasn’t really low rpms. Heck, I run my current splitter the exact same way and have since I bought it. Just a tic below full throttle usually. Has to be about 10 years now.

    Agree’d. And I know many people that are the same way. I tried to let my bil borrow my splitter several times and he adamantly turned me down.
