I found this alder in the middle of nowhere last Monday. The county dropped and bucked them right by the road in 3 or 4 spots. They looked healthy so my only guess is they were leaning towards the road. It was just before the spot where the road is closed for winter, so I never saw another vehicle. If I was driving my truck I could have got a full load. I got what I could and split it today.

I'm glad you decided to give that neglected wood a good home!

I was in the same area this afternoon and drove by as a county crew was driving away. Wish I was in my truck! On my way back to town I passed 3 vehicles going the other direction. 1 was a fisherman I had seen earlier, and the other 2 looked like they were going for firewood.

How nice! All cut up and right next to the road. I'm surprised they don't wrap a big red bow onto each on too!

I have to admit that, even though alder is not my favorite, those rounds would be hard to resist! They could not be any closer to the road without already being in the truck. Nice scrounge there!

Nice! Good bonus for the day huh? I just got a score of my own 30 minutes ago. Came upon a tree cutting service taking down an elm in someone’s front yard. They had rounds stacked next to the sidewalk so I stopped and asked if that was going to the dump. The guy told me it was for anyone who wanted it! So of course I loaded up right then and there. He even helped me load it!!!:D I will go back again for more after I drop this load off back home. Hopefully there is still some left when I return.

My only gripe about alder is the amount of ash that it leaves. It's straight grained, easy to split, quick drying, and pretty clean. It also seems to perform better than its BTU rating would indicate. After processing 10 cords of maple in the last year, all of those attributes are extra appealing.

The guys are probably laughing thinking about your splitting that elm. But you'll get the last laugh on this one.

Actually had this happen. My property runs along a county road. I cut a bunch of rounds and rolled them off the bank down to the road. Hauled a load up to the house, went back the next morning for another load to find most of it was gone.

I was cutting up a tree one time on my property and had a guy stop and yell at me that I was cutting up his wood. Said he got wood there all of the time. I explained in a not so nice way he would be best advised never to set foot on the property again.
