Just wondering if anyone has a particular method or ritual you use to help fall asleep. Maybe going out for a walk, a shot of brandy, relaxing music or counting wood stacks? For instance I like to turn on a movie I've seen numerous times. Movies that work good for me include "Hunt for Red October", any of the "Thin Man" movies or "Alone in the Wilderness". I generally don't have an issue falling asleep but I know once i start one of those movies I'll be out very quickly. Anyone else?
From the early to late 80's I used a cassette tape of a man that talked through over a 1/2 hour or so about imagining our body was a glass vessel, then talked us though imagining the feeling of each and ever limb being filled with liquid that instantly relaxed and all muscles, releasing thoughts or worries or whatever and becoming sleepy. You know, a calm voice new age type. I use that from memory til this day. I know you and your bride get up very early. I wish I could link this for you but it was a cassette tape many years ago. Whatever it's worth it worked for me and I still do it from memory in my mind sometimes.
exhaustion works for some It has worked for me, however if I fall asleep too early I might wake back up at 1AM ready to go. One thing I have found and it is easier said than done is nix the late night snack(s) that only elevate blood sugar levels making it difficult to sleep. I struggle with the 2 in the morning -woke up starving- vicious cycle that is hard to break.
I'm with you on the movies. "Edge of Tomorrow" is my new fave, seen it a gazillion times. Timer set for 45 minutes, I'm out in 5. "..On your feet, maggot!!", I'm usually out by then.
Interesting topic. I often listen to YouTube ASMR videos while falling asleep. A lot of the ASMR stuff is just weird but there's a few that I like. A couple of standbys are tapping (cork sounds are my favorite) and pencil writing sounds.
Sometimes I will take one Benadryl, two makes me antsy and is counter productive. Almost always take it when I travel, occasionally when I'm at home. Brother is a Dr. and suggested it, said it's non-habit forming. Also, if I need to wake up, I can, without feeling funky. 95 % of the time it's something I've seen a million times on TV with sleep timer set for 60 minutes. Seinfeld, Harrison Ford flick or Weather Channel (Weather Nation on Pluto TV) all seem to work.
I sit in my computer chair.......unintended nap. At bedtime, I go into the bedroom and lie down (on the bed, the floor's too uncomfy). Sleep follows shortly thereafter.
Good thread. I don't sleep worth a damm, am so used to it, I function pretty well without it. Things that have worked are Bob Ross and Alone in the Wilderness, but even those stop working after a while. Any boring show or soothing voice will do, when it works. My biggest problem is waking up and not going back to sleep. Generally after 3 or 4 days in a row of only a couple hours of sleep, I'll get a full night, 6 to 8 hours. This started in my 40s. I think it's a byproduct of a desk/traveling job.
Physical exercise during the day. A glass of red wine. An OTC heartburn pill. A cool room, with a big** antique metal box fan, with a towel draped over it, humming away. Thinking about my woodpiles. I take a minute dose of melatonin occasionally, but that has given me vertigo in the morning.
"....and the award for the wisenhymer of the morning goes to (sounds of envelope tearing).... papadave !!!"
Yep, good thread. A few KJV verses will do it. Every time. Interesting story tho- I worked one summer in high school with my grandfather, who served as the school district maintenance foreman. At lunch time, he’d eat his sandwich and drink coffee in 10 minutes... then, he’d pull his hat down over his eyes and be snoring within seconds... at the 29 minutes and 30 second mark of the whole 30 minute break, he’d rustle, clear his throat, reposition his hat and pop to. Every day. Never a second over. Did that every day he worked since he was 16. Died at the age of 74. That was the only nap he didn’t wake up from. Amazing.
Leg muscle cramps can really mess up my sleep.. I find bourbon or vodka really helps as a muscle relaxant. My wife however, can fall asleep in 5 minutes listening to a tv show, that contains Tom selleck, Sean Connery or Sam Elliot. Our daughter and I take bets on who falls asleep first lady (shepherd) or wife!!
Most of the time I turn on the Forensic files. Seen them I don't no how many times. What keeps me awake is thinking about work and family.
