Been there, done that. The problem is I can get closer and consistently get a nice flat cut with my saw. I do have my Stihl Combi unit but have not tried a brush cutting blade on this unit.
Yup. It does work. I remember one day, many years ago, my father had a real heavy duty brush cutter/weed eater. You had to where a full harness to run this thing. It was big, powerful, and a real work horse. A couple of people got using it and one day, someone forgot to do something. He fired it up and started using it and all of a sudden realized the blade was gone. Went looking for it and found it stuck in tree quite a ways away. I never forgot that when he told us that.

Dam. Straight. That was many years ago. And I never forgot it. None of us did. He was just talking about it a week or two ago. We were talking about tree/brush work.
All those saplings that keep growing back. Maybe you need a couple goats1 They will clean your saplings out and you won't hurt your back or dull your chain.
We had a big Husq straight shaft unit with a blade on it. It was OK for soft 1/2" stuff and smaller. Did a nice job. It was useless for 1" and up. A small chainsaw has been the best I've found even tho standing on yer head ain't much fun. Be cool to have a way to stand up with the saw on a HD handle at 90 degrees. Keep it just above the dirt and swing it into a stump. Would have to have throttle control up top too… and steel toed boots… and lots of chains.
I hear ya saves. This area will be kept mowed. I have cleared many an area on my property where my house is. The only time clear is if it is going to be kept mowed. Once I cut the saplings down flat with the ground I keep that area mowed and they will not come back. They try growing back up, but when you continually mow them down the stumps eventually die and rot away. I leave certain trees for shade, if they are in the right area, and are nice, straight and strong.
A couple hours after work today to haul in some more Ash and get a little more of the area cleaned up.
Took this shot the other day after a little more clean up. It's getting there, slow but sure. I haven't seen a tick yet!
It still hasn't started to rain yet. Perfect night for a fire. But waiting for it to start raining to burn one of those big piles. Dammit!
All geared up with treated clothes and other bug spray! Time to make some progress. All saplings need cutting as close to ground as I can get them. Then hopefully some york raking. And dirt work with the Bobcat at a later time. I had hoped to have grass seed planted in May. ? Early May!
A little progress. Glad it is cooler today. I'm sweating my azz off in these jeans, full length shirt, and chaps!
This bigger section will be next. About another half hour and the first section will be done. On break time now. The tall grasses you see on the right are on top of two good size mounds of top soil. I will need to spread that all over, especially in some large low spots. Problem is the second picture. I came down yesterday with the Bobcat and pushed the three smaller piles all into one pile to get them burned quicker and less mess to clean up. Then I started toward the big pile to push and lift it into a taller, smaller around pile. I didn't make it there. Real wet, the big pile is in the lowest point. Better get back to bustin some butt. Might get rained on. Prolly feel good right now.
This section is done. And here comes a light sprinkling. Too light out to be burning these big piles. Even though they are only 3'.
