Back in the day you could play stretch at recess. Pocket knives weren't outlawed back then.
I remember I was about 12 0r 13 when I bought my 22 Stevens rifle. Had it home for at least 2 weeks before mom and dad knew about it. I kept it and still have it.

I think I was about 13 When I bought my machete from the army surplus store , cut down many saplings and built camps in the woods , And then there was Tom, out at one of the camps that chugged some pizz from a Mountain Dew bottle  :rofl: :rofl:
Later years , cut bushes and more saplings , still have it along with the army green sheath.

Times have changed with respect to firearms and weapons for sure. I went to rural Mn college and kept my 12 ga mossberg pump in the closet of my campus housing. If there was a prohibition, there was not much made of it, as I was not the only one. We spent a lot of weekends out chasing ducks, grouse and pheasants. Along with fish, game was an important food source. This was a well known and participated practice by many at my school. By the time our children got to college, relatively few participate in field sports anymore.

We kept guns and hunting gear in our cars during high school because we were going duck hunting after school. Almost every boy had a pocket knife on them in grade school and high school.

Growing up we lived in Hawaii for a few years. At ages 12 and 13 I could buy a speargun and walk or bike around freely with it in the neighborhood on our way to and from the beach from spearfishing. We speared all kinds of reef fish, octopus, eels, lobsters and even a few stingrays (delicious). Our parents were very supportive of such activities and let us figure out how to clean and cook our own food because if we killed, we darn sure ate it.

This was our machine of choice.
We would walk the rail road tracks and pickup bottles.
$.02 per bottle til we had 2 quarters. We could play the rest of the day.

The thing I miss the most about days gone by isn't really a item, it's a sense of community! We used to walk to school, we'd always help somebody jumpstart a car, give them a push when they got stuck. They were your friends parents Neighbors. I post a lot of I helped this person on the way and pick up picked up a this kid from school.. we have a group of parents that are trying to instill this old philosophy. In our town and teach it to our kids..
