It's to get up to nearly 50° here today. I'm burning the coal bed down in my quadrafire now , and I'll remove ashes from it today.

    I'll restart the fire tonight.

Temp hanging in at -11 C feels -17 C or 12 f feels 2 f. Should warm a few degrees later and bring some snow. Not bad weather at all considering the time of year.

It’s not the -36 that’s bad it’s the—.2 that takes it over the edge.

I think I wasn't wrong about being skeptical about the forecast ... It's nearly 60 outside now.

It’s not bad as long as it’s low humidity and no wind. The coldest I have ever seen was -69, had to go to work in it. I kept telling them as soon as the toilet froze I was going home.
When I lived in northern Maine I saw. -59* once but in the -20’s to -40’s was common. It was high humidity and the wind never stopped blowing. I will take any negative temp where I live here in Alaska than a +32* high humidity windy northern Maine day.

Yes you can tell, at 0 and going to cut wood just a single layer is fine. At -32 2 layers and heavier socks, boots, gloves and hat is in order.

We are hitting the mid 40s again today! Some snow accumulations coming tomorrow night, followed by some rain, then colder mid-week, but only down in the single digits. It is usually below zero at nights this time of year.

Ice is holding at around 13" out on the local lake...certainly enough for some action in the darkhouse this morning.

A 27" pike for a fish fry tonight with my wife's parents.

A few trucks out on the ice, but not me yet...took the wheeler out. May have to move the house, the water is getting cloudy over the mud. Will set up over some sand, or shallower water until things settle out, or some snow cover subdues some of the algae and plankton.

When I was skiing, below 0 to 10ºF a knit balaclava/gaiter and clothes in general just wouldn't be good enough, it would have to also be wind proof. Open chair lifts, up there in the wind, were killer, especially for someone thin with not much built in insulation.
I find the same with cutting firewood in the cold. It doesn't take too many minutes to find out you have the wrong clothes for conditions. As I get older I find I have to have more face protection from the cold.

Cup of black coffee won’t touch the snow or color it.
