This is on Craigslist and the owner "thinks" it's silver maple...I'm not seeing silver maple though but I have known to be wrong. I wouldn't think silver would look that dense after being dead that long. Any other ideas?

Agree with Red Oak. With the bark already coming off, it will dry that much faster and burn long and hot. Tell him you'll take all the "silver maple" he can get.
Yes got it all, probably about a face cord. Some of the sapwood is pretty punky but the heartwood is solid. I think this tree was standing dead for a while and it blew over. Some of it cut short, like 12" which is a pet peeve of mine but hey, cant complain with FREE.
Good! This is my first haul of oak actually. Very rarely does it turn up for free around here, yet oaks are all over the place. Depending on how this is looking after I split it might get burned next year.
If you are that inquisitive, stick a moisture meter into it to determine what is moisture content is. That will tell you if it will be ready next year or not.
