That may be, though I'd say they are also trying to see which of the old stoves were most efficient so they could glean some additional knowledge that may help in their own designs.

Funny you said that though. Oddly enough, Steve Slatter of Vermont Stove Iron Works, co-owner or co-developer...don't know which...has mostly been converting the older CAT Elm stoves to Elm tube stoves and has much interest in that direction with many videos on youtube in the last several years as proof of that. Part of the reason, CAT's being abused, CAT castings that hold the cat itself, often being destroyed by too much heat and needing replaced much to often, stoves being over-fired...not sure how but it seems many CAT elms were over-fired, and are now being re-furbished by Mr. Slatter as tube stoves. So, he's taken things in a completely different directions. Keep in mind he does not produce these stoves any longer, just rebuilds them and has cast parts for them.

Some of the more modern looking wood stoves resembling the old cylinder stoves, many of which are made in Europe currently, are using "tube type" technology as well, rather than using CAT's. Obviously they have a reason. Some of those European cylinder wood stove manufactures are beginning to also implement and combine advances from down draft stoves, rocket stoves, and masonry heaters, into their stoves and get some really good heat from little wood all with great ambience...though the stoves look horrible to me. I don't like the modern look at all.

If I don't let my wife go to the beauty parlor for a dye job she would be completely gray. Does gray make her smarter?

In my mind....just more seasoned. :DSeasoned is better and seasoned blondes are better yet.

I'm with ya' though. My wife is only 45...would be completely gray if not for blonde in a bottle...and I love it. Then again, I'd love her if she was gray too. Either way is fine by me and I've seen some very nice looking seasoned women.

Comparing a Woodstock to an Elm is a JOKE. Hands down. Period!!

Woodstock won a green heat award.

Elm stopped production in 1989 because could not pass EPA standards.
    Got family in both towns!

The EPA outlawed the sale of those big black pieces of chit over 30 years ago for a reason.:handshake:

I can assure you sir, that is not what is happening. Tom has been making stoves long enough he does not need to do those sort of stupid things.

only when the cat is getting sluggish. if it's new, that might take a year or 2.

I intended to do ours this past summer but never got to it but the plan was to do it once per year. The cat is still working great now but I did take it out and brush it once already as there seemed to be a lot of fly ash on it.

Well my 2.5 year old one was getting sluggish. Add a house fire and ripping out Sheet rock... it died, I bought two last year. I switch them and give a vinegar bath about every 2 cord. Clean fly ash and stove every 60 days on warm day.

    But I've only used 1 match since 10/12.. And 1.25 cord..That's a win.

What's wrong with frugal? It's why most folks started burning wood.
